Rusalka

By Cosmic Cairns on March 27, 2024 7:08 pm

In Slavic folklore rusalkas are the spirits of drowned women who seek to lure unsuspecting people down to the water where they will grab them and pull them down to the bottom to share their fate.

My musical saw gets a bigger feature this week, although the track is mostly synth driven, with one vocal section featuring some cello and acoustic guitar as well.

Down by the water rusalka calls sweetly
Don't let her touch you she'll take you completely
And drag you down
Without a sound
Save for the muffled gurglings
Of your dying breaths

This track has a fairy tale atmosphere. The singing saw is such a great choice here, it almost sounds like someone singing. When the acoustic guitar and your signing enter, the vibe of the track changes again. This feels a bit different from your usual tracks, more melancholic, more nostalgic. A beautiful precious track you shared with us

Is this a similar subject like “song to the siren” by Tim Buckley? I see a parallel.

The singing saw felt right given the subject matter.  Thanks for listening!

I think there are definitely some similarities for sure.  Folk tales and mythology seem to have a thing about singing spirits leading people to drown.

Stay in your boat, if you your ship was captured by pirates time to reclaim it!

oh this is beautiful - i really adore that musical saw

There's a lake in my city called Rusałka. I dig the singing saw!

oh my god the saw + trip hop drums
the opening could be a rza beat, i'm not kidding - that is awesome

then it takes a happy turn, but it's also kinda creepy?

totally fits the scene

I like how the theremin/singing saw is kind of the musical representation of the call of the Rulsalka. The tune has a slight unease to it with the shift to slightly darker chords. Pretty cool!

Getting Tim Burton-esque fairy tale vibes from the magical and mystical saw and synths.  The saw is extra trippy for the ending.  Really cool sound to it.

It's always a good to stay in your boat or on dry land.  Especially if something's trying to lure you into the water.

There's something about those saws.  I started messing around with them over 20 years ago now, and it still blows my mind what beautiful, soulful voices they have.

Thanks!  And stay away from any strange women trying to get you take a swim in that lake!

I get what you're saying.  It would be creepy to get pulled to an underwater grave, but from the perspective of the vengeful spirit, it would be a happy occasion.

Saws are great at singing.  Once I settled on the concept,  I knew I had to go to the saws.

I can totally see the Tim Burton version of this.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks!!!

Lovely sounds, the saw and cello so perfect. I like the groove here, a hypnotizing flow, I feel being drawn down toward the river, I better be careful. Great one!
When I saw the title I thought of this Decemberists song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgyFEEsCmQo
I think you and Colin Meloy may share a little story telling DNA. I didn't realize Rusalkas were malicious, watch out!

This really feels like a fairytale.

I didn't know the Decemberists had a Rusalka themed song!  I saw them play live many, many years ago, but haven't really kept up with them for a while. He for sure has that story telling thing going.
