Really Wrong Number

By Cosmic Cairns on June 12, 2018 7:57 pm

So I have a general policy of not answering my phone if I don't recognize the number that's calling. I figure if it's something important, the caller will leave a voice mail.  The vast majority of the time they just hang up without leaving a message.  But the other day I got a call from an unknown number and they did leave a message.  So I listened to it and it became immediately apparent that it was a call that was not really intended for me.  It sounded like a recording of a woman speaking a language I don't understand a single word of.  I'm guessing maybe Mandarin or Cantonese?  I'm not sure.  I did notice she seemed to be kind of repeating certain phrases and it had a sort of rhythmic quality.  So I decided to build a track around it.  At first you hear the message pretty much exactly as it was left on my voicemail.  As the track goes on I started playing with it and looping and manipulating it to try to create a bizarre and disorienting effect along with some various synth sounds.  If anyone understands what she's saying, I'd be curious to hear a translation.  I'm assuming it's a sales call or something, but maybe she's trying to tell me something important!

In a future world, where telephone operators are back, and speak only asian languages. The Cairns Cosmic must battle the telephone system itself!

Duuude I got a very similar message and first thought 'Gotta sample that shit!!' ... but forgot about it... Sounds great C.C... Love the fun created amidst the chaos

Whatever she's saying, it sure is rhythmic. And your backing is perfect.

Aaah, that's cool. The synth voice is very nice with the vocals. I have the feel of a foreign airport again wink
Like in a dream you are alone on that airport and your flight is called and than it's called again on different gate... and again and again and you got more and more confused big_smile

Cool development with the operator's rhythmic message.  Kind of emulates the chaos of all the robocalls we get smile  Nice work!

That was a call from the future my friend. It could be a warning of an impending inter-dimensional event.  Or special financing offers on new cars with no payments due until 2040. Do not take the offer. You did the right thing by crafting this sonic counter measure that will confuse the future people as they monitor our communications.

Sounds so future sci fi with the robo call in a foreign, unknown language. Great idea for working with found audio. Some of the underlying synths carry the theme by sounding telephonic. Great track!

It could be a movie.  It almost writes itself.  smile

If you haven't deleted the message it would definitely be interesting to hear your take on the material.

I think the rhythmic quality is what made me think to use it in the first place.  And I'll take sounds wherever I can find them.  smile

Yeah I can see that.  Some of these phone samples have a way of sounding like people talking over intercoms or something.

Thanks!  Yeah these robocalls get out of hand sometimes, but I figure it's fun to take junk like that and turn it into art or something.

This is a sound theory.  Gotta mess with the future people's minds for sure.  And yeah, I tried to pick some synth sounds that sounded a little phone-ish to me.

I got a call on Father’s Day from a woman speaking Vietnamese. I almost hung up but the urgency in her voice gave me pause.  Instead, I interrupted her to tell her she had the wrong number. She told  me it was really hard to make the call and now she had the wrong number. I convinced her to tell me the number she had wanted and it was one off from mine. I told her she had an excellent practice call, now hang up, take a deep breath and call your dad. He is waiting to hear from you.  You have a good piece of music here built on a good idea.  Using ideas like that are very Charles Ives.

Totally a call from future .. hope you get translation. I wish more of those rando callers left me fun messages to sample! Anyway, great creative idea and execution, totally grooving to this, like your synths and of course that voice  manipulation!

I am imagining that this is an 80s cartoon.  I really want to watch this music video adventure!  Wild use of a wrong number!

...unless it was the RIGHT number?!?!?!?!?!?!

That's a cool story.  And at least it involves a real person accidentally calling you and not a robot.  I have to admit I'm not familiar with Charles Ives, but I just read about him and he sounds very interesting.  Now I'll have to check out some of his work.

Yeah, I have no idea how to spell out any of what she said, but maybe I could run it through some sort of voice recognition translation app.  I have to admit I am curious.  Thanks for listening!

That's what I'm wondering.  This could go much deeper than I could possibly imagine.

So much going on and it's absolutely fantastic. Pan city, which I am a huge fan of.

Thanks!  Yeah it's fun to play around with the panning.  Not enough modern music does that in my humble opinion.

this is so cool!  cool

sorry for my delay. I wanted to find out what this call was about, but did not find anyone to translate it.
I love this mysterious track and keep one looking for a translation.

No worries, and thanks for trying to translate!

Ha! I had 3 or 4 of these same calls this week. I never thought to make music out of it, nice job.

This is the only one I've had in a foreign language.  I just got another one where some guy was threatening me with federal legal action and this was my last warning, which was obviously utter B.S.  I thought about turning that one into a track, too, but my inbox was getting full and I needed to delete it.
