Professor Oglethorp's Lost Journals

By Cosmic Cairns on May 4, 2022 3:39 pm

My friend Bobby Bergland sent me some bare bones snippets of vocals and minimal synths recently and told me to go nuts with them.  I took that to heart.  I'm always excited to collaborate in any capacity with him as he's probably the best singer I've ever met in real life.  I wanted to highlight his original performance, but I also wanted to go nuts as he suggested so I loaded this thing down with a lot of weird experimental stuff.  I think I managed to accomplish what I set out to do.  The essence of his original recording is still there and at the same time this track is super crazy.  It was a lot of fun to do and I hope you enjoy it!

Woww, when that synth comes in at 1:00 minute. Nice sound design elements!

This is great stuff. Love the retro-glitchy vocals intro, really feels like some dude in the future did find those on some device and could not get all the data right...

Then this is quite the journey. And your friend vocals have awesome tones quality, it is deep, warm, very nice!

This sounds so good, there's a million cool bits of greatness in it, really awesome

The intro sounds like a melting animatronic country band discovered in a future excavation.  Like a country music Hall of Presidents. Great sounds and mixing. Love the trippy synth work and constant adaptation.  Your backing vocals blended nicely with your friends.  Hats off to the professor.

Thanks!  That synth line was fun to put together... as was the whole track!

Thanks!  I wanted to have that feeling of discovering some old glitchy data file or something.  And it's always a treat to be able to work with some really good vocals.

Thanks so much!  I appreciate that.

Thanks!  I wanted to get that feeling in the beginning of something old that wasn't functioning totally correctly anymore.  Glad to hear my backing vocals worked okay.  The one thing I didn't want to do was to detract from his performance, but I did want to give singing along with him a try.

This was a trip to listen to smile  I like how the percussion drives the track.  It has a drum machine feel but the kind that is expanding out of itself.  Awesome sounds and really creative use of the vocals.  Bravo!

It's not often that I click on a track just because of its name, but it seems like it always works out.  Your friend has a great voice!  Of all the crazy stuff that happens the second vocal on 02:37 was my favorite, probably because by that point something so harmonious and smooth was so unexpected.

According to this link I just googled, the journals seem likely to contain thoughts on "developing innovative research and educational programmes that create the next generation of leaders in technology and management."  Although we'll probably never know, since they're lost.  Maybe they were just daily food diaries.

Amazing psychedelic journey—absolutely was in love with the noisy opening alone but then it just kept developing… Go nuts you did, this is awesome.

Thanks!  It was a trip to create as well!

Thanks for clicking and listening!  I knew amidst all of the craziness I wanted to showcase a bit of the basic track my friend sent me.  He really does have a wonderful voice.  I've tried a few times to get him to join WB, but he seems strangely resistant.  Perhaps I might get him to send me some more snippets to mess around with though.  As for the Professor, that's funny that you found one through googling, although I see that's Professor David Oglethorpe who I believe is the great nephew of Professor Eustace Cornelius Oglethorp and who followed his uncle's footsteps into academia.  However they could still be daily food diaries.

Thanks!  It was a lot of fun putting together the noises on this one.

And go nuts you did. This is quite a trip. The intro is really weird, and then you have this gradual buildup of the synth, which I suspect is a Shepard's tone? Your friend indeed has a great voice and sings very well. This is a very strange atmosphere. This sounds like the music that I imagine they play at the restaurant at the end of the universe. Relaxed, slow paced, with retro synth, and slightly off and weird. That was delicious.

Thanks!  I used a massive echo/delay effect that kind of created a Shepard's tone.  It wasn't totally intentional on my part, just playing around with sounds and effects and that was the result.

BB has a lovely voice!  i like when CC sang the repeated vocal part - that was a nice touch!
what a psychedelic adventure you took us on!

Thanks!  I knew I wanted to do a little echoing of his parts, but I'll admit it was a tiny bit intimidating singing alongside him just because he's such a great singer.  Glad to hear it worked!  And thanks for another awesome gif!  That certainly fits the mood!

from the start to the end, I was fascinated by your technical skills you delivered. the synthwork, special effects, the mixing and of course the creativity. An awesome amusing track. very well done.

So cool. A good trip. From a psychedelic circus cinema. Love the intro, then quite a big change up, but voice carries through. Inspiring, I wanna go get weird! Love the BB voice but you took it beyond the cosmos.  I like your vocal additions too, like the filtered little accompaniments.

The beginning is a little jarring, but I love what you've done around the performance.

Thanks!  I tried to pull out all the stops on this one.

Thanks!  Psychedelic circus cinema seems like a good description.  It's fun to go get weird!
