Overlords

By Cosmic Cairns on August 22, 2024 9:37 pm

Sometimes it's hard not to feel angry about the world.  The way the worst people seem to gather power. The way those people like to use lies and disinformation to keep us divided. The way so many of us seem to expend so much of our time and energy further enriching people who already have more money than anyone could possibly need in a lifetime just so we can get a few crumbs for ourselves.  It's sickening and maddening, and I don't really know what to do about it, so I wrote this song.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

They'll snuff you out one day at a time
Wear you down in increments and
Chip away at all that's sublime
In your heart and in your unique mind

This one's still got some small spark of life
Drain it, stifle it, slice it with a knife

They'll dictate what's wrong and what's right
Fill your head with ignorance and
Dampen out all glimmers of light
Turn you against your family and your friends

Yes, let's keep them at each other's throats
While we burn them all and crush their souls

Let's bust out of this cell
And we'll freeze over Hell
Might as well

Reminds of a ode to the public education system here in the states. A tribute to the fallen state of America,   captures it all too well.

Lyrics hit hard for sure, "dampen out all glimmers of light".  Excellent guitar solo with uplifting drum feels throughout.

let's bust out heart

The same problems here. Good, you are around. The track is strong and rich of production skills. A+++

You're on fire and now am I!

oh man, the alternate voice saying "this one's still got some spark of life"

super dark, i could see the scene in my head.

social media/24hr news cycle in a nutshell...

great tune and message with the lyrics! Agree with orangedrink, the vocal effect is great.
Love the arrangement and it sounds so filled out and wonderfully mixed!

Yes! Agree with the comments above about lyrics and vocal treatment, so good. I like how this isn't just angry yell fest. It's still a catchy flowing romp in your signature style, enjoyed it. Yes, might as well bust out! Indeed, the busting out shall commence.

Yeah, I feel like the public education system hasn't been great for a while with all the standardized testing and whatnot, and now it feels like they're trying to attack it even more by banning books and dictating what teachers are allowed to teach, and hanging up the ten commandments in classrooms.

I feel like I've always generally been a decently optimistic person, but there's no denying there are some awful people in the world doing some awful things.  I'm trying to maintain a sense of hopefulness, but I'm more fearful for the future than I used to be.  Thanks for listening!

A lot of these issues sadly seem to be a global phenomenon.  I'm not sure there's any perfect place anywhere, but I am sure that things could be a lot better.  Thanks!!!

Yeah, social media and 24 hour news have indeed had a really destructive impact on the world.  I miss the days before either of those existed and am glad I got to experience them.

Thank you.  I was envisioning there being a couple different speakers, so adding a vocal effect to that part felt like the best way to communicate that.

I definitely felt very angry while writing the lyrics, but I do think sometimes a more measured delivery can be more effective than just screaming.  Not that I'm against a good scream once in a while.
