Open Pumpernickel

By Cosmic Cairns on July 13, 2022 11:35 pm

It's been a bit of a busy work week and my sleep schedule has gotten a little off, but I'm hanging in there.

In other news the fur baby population of my family has increased.  We had some sketchy people living next door to us and they moved out recently and just left their two cats behind.  It took me a little while to gain their trust and befriend them, but we got them both into the house about a week ago and they haven't wanted to go back outside since.  They're doing well with our two dogs, but the cat we already had is a little miffed by their presence.  I'm sure she'll get over it in due time.  We've got a really full house now critter-wise, but I'm a softie when it comes to cute animals.

Oh yeah and the Sunday this goes live is going to be my birthday.  Not sure if I'm going to do anything in particular to celebrate this year, but I'll at least try to enjoy the day.  I'm looking into possibly treating myself to a couple music-related toys as a gift to myself, so that may be the extent of how I celebrate.

Anyway for this week's track I wanted to build around a bassline and have some guitars and synths on top.  At the last minute I decided to improvise a tiny bit of vocals.  I just sang "I can see the eyes of the world peeking in" for no particular reason other than it just sort of popped into my head.  And then I added a short ambient section at the end and came up with the title as a play on "Open Sesame."

That's really awesome of you guys to take in those cats.  Very shitty of them to just leave them behind, but luckily they had some good neighbors.

This is a really cool track this week.  I love the over driven vocals!  I've been experimenting a little bit with that (but haven't actually published anything with it).  Such a cool effect.  Great bass part too.

Happy birthday too! Go get yourself some gear.

Happy birthday!  Have some assholes' cats + a lot of respect for taking them in. cool

Great riff this week; I only noticed how much my head had been bobbing when it stopped.

Yoooo, happy birthday, make it a good one
And enjoy the fluffy babies, guess they can be a present in a way
Great song, too, not sure what that buzz is at 1:07, but maybe a little less of that?
- Ebrit

Happy birthday !!! WOW, there are a lot of things going wild in your life right now. the song has a good drive and all the tracks fit nicely together. the melodies are well interwoven. the ending was surprising and a beautiful outro. I would like to know what present you make yourself for your birthday.

Congratulations cat daddy, and happy birthday! What a great, really different style track in your ever expanding musical styles.  Yet another favorite for that bass line and those spacey synths.

Thanks!  I'm hoping to continue to try some different stuff as far as the vocals go.  They were a little bit of an afterthought on this one, but glad to hear they came out okay.

I'll never understand people who treat pets like property that is easily discarded.  I met their landlord and he said he was going to trap the cats and take them to the pound, where they would most likely just be put down.  I decided then and there that I needed to step up to the plate and take them in.  They've turned out to be really sweet cats, too, so I'm glad I did.

That buzz is just a distorted guitar.  I was trying to add some different textures in, but I suppose not all of them will be pleasing to everybody.

Thanks!  As for presents, I already got one thing, which is just a silly kid's toy that alters your voice in 8 different ways, but I love that sort of thing for recording strange sounds.  I'm also going to try out a re-amper.  I'm not super familiar with them (although I'm sure a lot of folks around here are), but it sounds like they can do some pretty cool stuff like taking the effects from a guitar pedal and applying them to pretty much any track you have recorded.  Sounds like I ought to be able to get some interesting results from that.  I'm looking forward to messing around with it at least.

I went into this track knowing that I wanted it to be bass-centric on some level.  And then that bassline pretty much just popped right out instantaneously and I felt like I was in business.

Oof this bassline will be stuck in my brain for a bit. Very nice. Glad to hear the cats are settling in well

It's fine, just a little strong in the mix

Thanks!  They are making themselves quite at home already.

Gotcha.

The drums give this track an energetic pace and your vocals were a nice touch in the mix.  That outro was even cooler with how it sort of floated off into the distance.  Oh and Happy Belated Birthday!!!  Also yay cats smile

Thanks!  The cats are doing well.  One of them has decided to become my bedtime buddy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! and congrats on the new cats!
This track bumps like a beautiful car ride through the city at night, lights screaming by, while resting easy in a misty darkness big_smile

Happy birthday and you have a kind heart to welcome all the furry animals on your neighborhood! Tasty bass lines, and a lot of interesting melodies from various instruments. Maybe it's the description, but it sounds like each instrument is the voice of a different animal, and you're the bass that walks through the house, meeting each animal. I need more coffee.

hope you & your new fur friends had a super birthday week!

i really like the synth & guitar tones in this piece - the outro is really pretty

That's an interesting way to look at it.  Sounds like a good interpretation to me!

Thanks!  The kitties are still settling in, but they're doing pretty well.  They haven't quite got the swing of the litter box yet, but we're working on it.
