Neverworld

By Cosmic Cairns on September 25, 2024 9:48 pm

Outside our hotel room in Hawaii there were a couple of what I thought were birds talking to each other from trees at night.  I stood right below the trees they seemed to be coming from and recorded a little of their conversation with my phone as I tried to spot them.  As hard as I looked, I couldn't see them.  I did a little online research and realized they most likely were not birds, but rather tiny little frogs about the size of a penny.  That's probably why I couldn't see them.  They were really loud for being so small.

A couple nights later we were gassing up the car at a station near a big grove of trees.  It sounded like there were hundreds of the frogs talking to each other and it sounded really cool.  I recorded some of that on my phone as well.  It didn't do it justice to how it sounded in real life, but it was still pretty neat.

I used the phone recordings I made as the backdrop for this week's track.  I somehow managed to improvise the guitar solo at the end in one take.  It's a little raggedy, but I kind of like that.

The mist was dissipating
Orange light filled the horizon
Rolling meadows lay unfurled
And tucked down in the valley
Light blue lagoons were shimmering
Deep inside the Neverworld

Fields of grass were swaying
Echoes reverberating
Through the canyons and the hills
And off in the distance
A crystal tower glistens
Watching over things unreal

Radiant moonbows faded
The Eastern skies were brightening
Ocean waves rippled and curled
Bright colored flowers opened
To greet the rising sun as
Morning broke in Neverworld

Waterfalls cascaded
And dolphins were elated
To frolic in the sheltered bay
Hummingbirds flit near trees
Danced with fuzzy bumblebees
Singing their way through the day

Sweet sweet melodies, E. I love the texture and melodic content of those frogs! smile

A good foley recording both grounds a track and also is the perfect anchoring to a memory. Now you will always have a teleportation mechanism to that moment in time. The vocal melodies, and effects, along with the acoustic guitar remind me of early David Bowie stuff (starman). I love the bass behind that guitar solo, it has a playful vibe. And congrats on the solo! The point is not perect melody, it's riding the wave and capturing something in the moment, with all its beautiful nuances. And you did just that. Thank you, i was able to go to Hawaii a little thanks to your track.

This feels super raw and evocative. Great job, I really REALLY like the feeling of the guitar. And great job on the improvised solo at the end, that's wild!!!
The frogs actually do give this tune A LOT of character, hahahaha... Nice work!!!

FROG FRIENDS!!  heart

love your vocals on this, and yeah - nice work on that solo!

happy to go along on this adventure with you

And did you smuggle a pennyfrog in your wallet back home? Your stories are the best. I love your open mind for those things.
Fantastic description of Neverworld in the lyrics. very nice guitar strumming and soloing at the end. Looking forward to the next chapter.

neverworld sounds like my kind of place, love the field recordings!

Love the sounds of summer as the backdrop! Dig the little breakdown at 3min with the guitar solo. Great layers with the synth, acoustic. And an amazing job as always with the lyrics/vocals.

Neat imagery and atmosphere, described and recorded! Love the recordings. Nice lyrics!

Felt like I was on a forest moon called Endor with that lovely intro smile  Love the uplifting and positive feels of the chord progression. Excellent lyrics too that paint a soothing setting.

Those frogs were really something.  I could have sat and just listened to them by themselves for a long time.

I do enjoy a good field recording and I think one of the best parts about modern day phones is we basically have a recorder with us all the time.  Anytime I'm out in the world and hear an interesting sound, I do my best to capture it.  And I agree, I think there's something to those first take intuitive parts of music.  I just usually mess them up too badly on my first try for them to be even remotely useable!  smile

I'm not going to lie, the frogs did a lot of the heavy lifting here.  smile  Thanks for listening!

It made me recall the track you did earlier this year that utilized some frog samples.  I even toyed with slowing them down in tribute to your track, but in the end I decided there was something about them at regular speed that spoke to me for this track.  Maybe in a future track I'll use them again at another speed.  smile  Thanks for coming along for the ride!

They seem like they'd be a nice pet, but I'd probably get in big trouble if I tried to take one with me.  Thanks for listening as always!

I wouldn't mind going there myself.  Gotta love field recordings.

Thanks!  I knew as soon as I heard those frogs that I'd have to get them into a track somehow.

It did have a sort of otherworldly feeling to me.  We get some birds, occasional crickets, or cicadas during the summer around here, but otherwise no creatures that sound anything like this.  I couldn't resist recording them.
