Nebulous Bicycle

This is a bit of a sound experiment.  I constructed this entirely out of recordings I made on my phone.  I've got a sample I made of a kid's toy, the sound of the ocean outside my room from a trip I recently took to California, samples I made of various hospital equipment, some recordings from an art car festival I was at recently where I got some crowd noises along with the sound of competing DJ's on either side of me and a giant robot that breathed fire, and some of my own vocals making a sort of simple bass line.  The sound quality is all kind of degraded since it was all recorded on my phone, but hopefully it ended up being a bit of an interesting experiment.

The best field recorder is the one you always carry around! very lateral track! would make a great intro to an album!

big_smile This was intense!
Sounds are nice... especially i like thow mowmow bass voice of yours. This ends with a quite futuristic feeling...
I guess the synth are from that DJs. Maybe you made a timetravel out of a fun fair...

Fun track! The dentist drill sound made me a bit anxious but then it was gone. All kinds of cool sounds in here smile

I wish you hadn't made that reference. Now all I can envision is fun-fair dentistry.

Yeah, I'm always trying to capture cool sounds now whenever I hear them out and about.  I had a little collection starting to form which is what inspired me to make this track.

Yeah there were different synths and beats coming from either side of me so I tried to position myself right in the middle where it all kind of slammed together into a weird noise.

No dentist drills actually.  That's probably the kid's toy I sampled, which opens up the track.  I just saw it on a shelf at a store and it made a weird noise so I recorded it.

I guess Fun-fair Dentistry would be a good alternate title for this.  smile

The underlying loop is genius and the bass vocal matches up with a cool robotic quality. I'd say if you lost or filtered out some of the noise and stiffened with a beat, it would be pretty tight. Very cool collage of sounds.

Nice rich collage, tripped me way out, and sounds like you had fun trip. Like the mow mow voice. Love the idea of using phone recordings, so good to have little recorder in our pockets.

This was a great idea for an experiment!  I need to do something like this just to mix up the year.  It's a nice little audio photo album of places you've been and things you've seen (heard).  I love this kind of stuff.  Also LOL at MOWMOWMOWMOWMOWMOWMOWMOW

That's the kind of thing I would do if someone told me to "stop being so annoying"

The toy sample had an awesome sound to it.  The drill unfortunately gave me flashbacks of too many cavities tongue  Not sure if there was an actual bike chain in there, but with all the sounds BUMBUMing around it had this chain-turning feel to it. Noice!

Yeah, I was kind of thinking of trying to filter especially some of the sort of background hiss, but then I figured it gave it a sort of lo-fi quality.  Could also probably feature a more prominent beat, but it kind of had some conflicting beats from the competing DJ's so I thought it might work better as more of a collage.

I have mixed feelings about cell phones.  I definitely don't like how they create a sense that you're available to be contacted all the time.  But I do like how they make for good field recorders since you never know when you might encounter a neat sound.

Thanks.  Yeah, you should definitely try something like this.  It's fun!  I was kind of thinking the MowMow's would kind of simulate the bassline sort of breaking down and dying off or something.

For reals there's no drill in there. smile  I think it's the toy that kind of sounds like a drill, but I just thought it was a weird cool sound and thought I'd sample it.

Cool idea for sure, this is actually really fun to listen to.  So many sounds to focus on.  Although I do agree, the "dentist drill" sound essentially filled me through and through with dread.

Thanks!  I find it interesting that the sound that seems to be the most anxiety inducing originates from a toy meant for children.  Maybe they don't have that dentist drill connotation yet so it isn't terrifying for them?

Interesting as an experiment, and a very cool musical ride! Some weird and wonderful sounds in here.

Thanks!  I'm always trying to keep my ears peeled for interesting sounds out and about in the world.

Thanks!  I did record some samples of the ocean so maybe that's contributing to the underwater feel.
