Neap Tide

By Cosmic Cairns on March 21, 2024 7:31 pm

I came across the term "Neap Tide" recently and it struck me I really liked the word "Neap."  It basically just refers to the time when there's the least difference between high tide and low tide, so I came up with a little story about using it to plan when to embark on an adventure.

I wanted to feature a prominent cello line, since I haven't played my cello much yet this year.  I used it a little bit in week 7, but it has a larger role in this track.  I also realized I haven't used my musical saw at all yet this year, so it makes a brief cameo appearance this week.  I'll have to give it a bigger feature soon.

This ended up becoming a little more epic than I originally thought it was going to.  It's the longest track I've done so far this year, and as such, the file size ended up being just a smidgen above the 16mb maximum upload allowed for WB.  I had to convert it to a lower quality mp3 just to get it on here, but hopefully that won't affect it too much.

And when the half full moon is starting to rise
Head due west for six miles as the crow flies
Be sure to stay alert with eyes open wide
Search for the hidden cove at the neap tide

A small skiff waits to take you away
Across the still water and into the quiet night
Sea mist envelopes you, shoreline falls out of sight now

And you will reach an island off of the coast
Out near the old shipwreck still haunted by ghosts
And drop your anchor down into the seabed
Wait here until Orion moves overhead

Stay real still and don't make a sound because
That's when the mermaids will surface and start to sing
Of sunken cities somewhere in the deep marine sea

And it's guarded by giant squids
But there's a back way in
A gate built from the skeleton
Of an ancient megalodon
Been half buried hundreds of centuries

And if you go I hope you come back alive
And you retrieve the scrolls from the sunken archive
A hovercraft awaits to give you a ride
I'll meet you by the cliffs at the neap tide

Wow this is so expressive! Love all the layers, especially the cello! This sounds like if TMBG wrote a folk album, and I mean that in the best possible way. The changeup for the last two lines of the 3-line stanzas especially give me that TMBG vibe. Really excellent work, the whole song really demands your attention!

Very emotional piece of music. The strings work fine and give it a well-grounded athmosphere. The organ and especially the guitar in the end are very cool too. Fine work!

Oh yeah, I hear the TMBG now smile The cello reminds me of Magnetic Fields too. Love the saw, looking forward to more saw please and thank you!

Another epic gift. I enjoy your easygoing tracks very much, which are full of nice sceneries and storytelling. The instrumentation is typical Cosmic Cairns, fragile and sensitive and very very beautiful. Thanks.

Your music always manages to bring me back to my college days and the bands I was really into then. I love the sound!

Thanks!  I listened to a lot of TMBG especially in my younger days, so it wouldn't surprise me if they've managed to infuse my musical DNA.

Thanks!  The cello was the beginning point and everything else kind of built outwards from there.

I will definitely get some more saw going in the very near future.  It always seems to add a nice touch to stuff.

Thank you!  Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts on tracks.

I remember being in college and wondering if a) I would still enjoy making music in the future and b) if so if my college aged self would like the stuff I made when I was "old."  I do still enjoy making music and I think my younger self would like what I'm doing now because I generally like a lot of the same music as I did back then.

This is pretty epic.  Def can hear the TMBG. But your voice sort of lends itself to that anyway.  So cool that you played a saw!  I was wondering if it was a theramin at first.  Cool track man.  A lot of work to put this together.

Your vocals sound great in the stereo field.  It really fills up the space nicely between the guitars, drums and saw.  Def conveys those epic nautical adventure vibes.  I like the chorus part where it takes a sort of sea shanty rhythm to it with the lyrics.  The synths give that view of the night sky feel too.  I like the melancholic chords during the outro.  Well done!

A perfect pace and tone for hearing the tide at night under a full moon, exploring the pools. Cello melody so peaceful. ooh, love that change in rhythms going between verses, the 1/4 note triplet thing, wow, effective. Cello and saw are perfect for this. The saw seems of the the sea for sure. Instumental breaks are so nice, cool how this is longer, it works. The lyrics paint quite the picture. Made me think of book I recently read, The Mountain in the Sea, speculatative thriller featuring Octopi and AI, fun one. Neap sure is a great word. This makes me eager to go to the ocean, I'll be on the Pacific in April and June. Thanks for sparking the imagination with this song!

you shot that arrow straight for my heart this week, lovely!
hooray for cello, hooray for saw, hooray for your sweet melodies
heart

I like that slower vibe in the track tonight. It's good to hear your cello back! I missed it from WB2022! I actually was surprised by the quality of the sound you got from the cello, I thought it was my wife playing the violin in the next room for a second. That section at 1:24 gave me goosebumps. It's like an epic lullaby in space.

absolutely love the cello

Excellent track! Gives me a Dead Meadow meets Subpixel vibe, and that initial change up at 1:34 was really fun and cool. Love the overall arrangement, the choice of instrumentation and tonal palette was delightful.

huzzah for the saw!!!

This is so so so good! Epic!

Yeah saws and theremins do have a similar sound, but I feel like saws are maybe a little bit "prettier"?

Thanks for coming on the nautical adventure with me.  It was a fun one to put together.

Thanks for your kind comment.  I haven't heard of that book.  Sounds like I should check it out.  Hope you have fun on your ocean trips.  If all goes according to plan I should be taking a couple beach trips this year as well.

I realized we're already a good chunk into the year and I hadn't really played much cello yet.  It was time to remedy that.  Thanks for listening!

Cellos really are great, aren't they?

Thanks!  I had fun with the changeups and the instrumentation on this one for sure.
