Let the Left One Out

By Cosmic Cairns on February 29, 2024 5:44 pm

I was scrolling through my notes where I jot down random ideas when I came upon the phrase Let the Left One Out.  I vaguely remember writing this down as a play on the title of the vampire movie Let the Right One In.  I found this mildly amusing and was going to move on but something about it stuck with me and I came up with a little story about two prisoners.

*Edit* - I only just now realized I rhymed the word "out" with "out" in the last verse.  Oops.  But oh well.  I guess there aren't any ironclad laws about lyrics at the end of the day.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The guards said they were confused
By an elaborate ruse
I guess that I can't refuse
To hear the story out

Two prisoners kept out of sight
In mirror image cells locked up airtight
One on the left one on the right
Accused of high crimes
It's a sign of the times

Each prisoner says they're our guy
And that the other one lies
Can't you see that guy's a spy?
I'll need some proof
To know who tells the truth

The right one says "Hey man, that's great
I've got all the current codes
And you know I went to high school
With the Captain's cousin Joe
So let me out."

The left one's codes were all wrong
He shrugged and let out a yawn
Said "By the way the Captain's cousin's named John
My codes are just old
Been out in the cold for so long."

The left one's story checked out
Made the call to let him out
Learned he was our long missing scout
And he'd brought back news...

Haha, I knew from the moment I read the title that it was a play on that movie title. Cool 60's/70's psych rock vibes. And fuck the haters, rhyming words against themselves is a power move.

Diggin the 60s feels with the vocal harmonies and fuzz guitars.  A fun lyrical journey throughout as always smile

another tasty melody  heart

I really enjoyed this, loved the harmonies in the chorus!

Cool tune man.  I love the solo and bridge around 1:40.  What a wonderfully weird world you've created.  I can visualize every absurd lyric.  It's also to think about 2 prisoners arguing about which one is guilty, as if that's how prison works, lol

Had to think of a children’s book I was reading to my kids, when they were small. It was about two gangsters, Spobrockel und der Linke. So I already had a picture in my head, when the music started. And I was not disappointed.

you WHAT?! UNACCEPTABLE!! mad
...actually, it still feels like two different words: "checked-out" could be one hyphenated word, so it makes sense.
got a nice microcosm of adventure and uplift here heart

I usually don't pay much attention to the lyrics but I really enjoyed the writing in your track. The whole arrangement worked for this. The chorus with the vocal harmonies was a really nice touch, especially the "shabah shabah", and the little piano notes. A lot of beautiful little touchs that contribute to a great track.

Thanks!  I normally try to avoid the whole rhyming a word with itself thing, but what's the big deal, really?  Maybe I'll lean into it and do it even more!  smile

Thanks!  I had fun coming up with the story for this one.

Thanks!  Tasty melodies are the best kind of melodies in my opinion.

Thanks!  Those harmonies are probably my favorite part as well.

It would be funny if prison worked that way.  I think I may have been subtly influenced by that prisoner's dilemma game where you have to choose whether to cooperate or flip on each other.

That sounds like a fun book and a good mental picture for the song.

Yeah, it's a very different usage/meaning for the word "out".  I think that's why I didn't notice for a long time that I did that.

Thanks!  My other main creative outlet is fiction writing, and while I often feel like it uses a different part of my brain than songwriting (lyrics are often more abstract and touch on moods and feelings more than literal sense), sometimes I like to try to bring that storytelling aspect to songs, such as in this case.

I could actually see the muppets enacting the story to this song.

Ha, I knew that title reminded me of something. Great story and lyrics! You are a wonderful imaginative story teller, I appreciate them! The distorted guitar sounds good, just the right crunch. Nice little do woppy sha la la background vox, ha, loved that. Yeah no rules for for rhyming, no rules for anything anymore right?

Cool movie and fun track with a nice grindy guitar tone. I like the fantasy lyrics and story as well.  And some well placed sha la la... la las! Can't go wrong!  Btw, if you like Let the Right One In, you may like another independent vampire film called A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

Yeah, I figure there are more suggestions than rules, and even if there are rules, then why not break them sometimes?  Who's enforcing these rules anyway?  The song police?  They can get bent!  smile

Couldn't resist the sha la la's.  They were too much fun to do.  I haven't seen that movie, but I'll have to add it to my ever growing list of stuff to check out.

This is a neat story, and a neat song.
