Kissing Cobras

By Cosmic Cairns on September 8, 2020 7:16 pm

A little while back Chrisfoo alerted me to a sale that was going on for a plugin called Iris2.  It was marked down to $10 from $150.  I knew absolutely nothing about it, but that seemed like too good of a deal to pass up, so I went ahead and bought it.  I haven't really used plugins before.  Heck, I've honestly barely delved into using MIDI before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect from it.  Although I've heard many awesome tracks here on WB that utilize all kinds of plugins so I'm sure they're cool.  So anyway I've played around with it a tiny little bit since I bought it, but I haven't exactly taken it out for a real test run yet.  So that's pretty much what this track is.  I'm just messing around with a few of the different sounds and trying to get a feel for what it can do.  I've just barely scratched the surface, but I can tell it's got some interesting sounds and you can mess with them by changing a bunch of different settings.  I always like that sort of thing.  Looks like it should be a fun toy to have in my toolbox.

This track is wild, man. That first minute is really something, and it just keeps going. Seems like the plugin was worth it.

This sounds like an extreme version of a vocoder, very interesting sound there. Looking forward to hearing more tracks featuring it!

Wow, this track is crazy! I love those bitcrushed textures.

This plugin passed your test run brilliantly. I love the bassline, the swing in the beat and the fizzling synth texture above. well done.

I never tried Izotope Iris plugin but I do uses some of their "element" plugins to give my life easier to mix my tracks. They do great software in my opinion.

Your track sounds very cool. Well done. Quick question, is this virtual instrument is pretty heavy on the computer CPU/RAM wise?

Have a good week!

yooooooooooooooo welcome to the plugins CULT

Kissing Kobras would be a good band name

I agree, I like how subtle they are, but really shape the feel of the piece

Thanks!  Yeah, I figured $10 wasn't too much to risk.  Even if I ended up not liking it.  But fortunately I think I do like it.

I'll have to remember to keep it in the rotation.  After I got it I sort of forgot about it for a little bit.  I'm used to having big physical instruments sitting in my face and demanding that I use them.  smile

I'm definitely interested to explore it more.  I liked the textures, too, and these were just kind of the first things I played around with.

Thanks!  I thought it came out pretty cool for something that was more or less just messing around.

I'm pretty impressed with it so far just in the little bit I've played with it.  I'm not really sure on the CPU usage.  I didn't notice my computer slowing down or anything, but I suppose it's something to watch out for.

Uh oh, am I about to go down another rabbit hole?  I've spent way too much money on music making stuff already.  At least plugins don't take up more physical space.  That would be a good band name.  Maybe for like an 80's hair band or something?  I can even kind of picture what the logo would look like.

oh yeah Kissing Kobras would be very similar to Poison

Plugins are a crazy rabbit hole, but I actually haven't gone too crazy.  The main thing is that I've bought post-production (mixing/mastering) plugins, but just imagine, plugins are like virtual guitar pedals, and you know how people go nuts over guitar pedals!

Heh they could share a bill with Poison on a 2021 Reunion World Tour.  And yeah, I do know how crazy people go over guitar pedals.  I think I'll limit myself to this one plugin for now.  At least until I get more of a feel for it.  smile

Lol, I love this as a band name, and always a soft spot in my heat to remember sixth grade rocking out to Poison. Just watched episode of Cobra Kai with Poison in it. Full nostalgia zone. I was actualy in a band briefly called Chrome Cobra, some proggy bizness there though.

Great stuff from that plugin, sounds like a fun one! This was fun and interesting to listen to. Kinds of crawls under the skin.

Ha ha, Chrome Cobra is a great name, too.  I bet you guys totally rawked.  Seems to be a whole cobra theme going on here with Poison showing up in Cobra Kai.  I haven't watched that yet, but I hear it's pretty fun.  For my title I just sort of like the ambiguity of if it was two cobras kissing each other or if it was a person kissing cobras, which seems like a terrible idea.  But also kind of awesome in a rawk sort of way.

100% I love ambiguously evocative stuff like that.

cobras kissing also sounds super creepy

This was awesome stuff! It starts like there´s a powerful techno track coming on, but luckily it keeps on the leftfield track. Very powerful and you clearly used the stuff according to your strenghts... great work!

Thanks!  I think to a certain extent you can't help but sound like yourself no matter what you're playing on.

So many possibilities open up with midi and plugins.  Sometimes too many but yais it's a good option to have in the toolbox.  This has a nice atmosphere to it with those bit crushed parts and the deep melodical bass synth.  Nice use of the stereo field too.  They're really moving nicely around.

I've historically been more of a "physical" instruments person as I took violin lessons as a kid, but virtual instruments certainly open up a whole realm of possibilities and I don't want to close myself off to them.  It's fun to explore new ways of making sounds!

ayyyyy!  Sorry I'm just getting to this now man, still playing catch up from my couple weeks I missed.  Glad you like Iris though man, I'm loving it too.  You managed to get some awesome sounds here, sounds like you got into using the modulators too on some of these.  The bass sound at the beginning is wild too, very unique.

Oh by the way, if you didnt see, Plugin Boutique is doing another crazy deal on a different iZotope plugin, Break Tweaker.  $10 down from $250.  I thought about it, but its really not my kind of thing and I dont really have the time to try and learn new software right now. Thought I'd give you the heads up if you want to check it out!

Yeah, I played a little bit with some modulation.  I was really just playing around and trying a few things out to see what they did.  It's a cool plug-in though for sure.  I can tell I've only barely scratched the surface with it.  I'll have to read about that other plug-in.  That's obviously a fantastic deal also, but I'm not sure if I want to overwhelm myself with plug-ins at this point.  I'm still kind of dipping my toe in the water with them.  But thanks for the heads up!  I appreciate it.
