Hey There Telescope

By Cosmic Cairns on October 2, 2024 9:42 pm

We did an excursion on my recent vacation to the summit of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in Hawaii (and when measured from its base at the bottom of the ocean floor, it's actually taller than Mt. Everest).  We saw probably the most amazing sunset I've ever seen up there and then got to do some stargazing.  There are about 13 massive scientific telescopes on top of the mountain.  It's one of the best places in the world for a telescope because it's above the clouds so there are clear skies most nights of the year and there's no light pollution because it's in the middle of the ocean.  We obviously didn't get to look through any of the high-tech telescopes, but the structures they were housed in still looked cool.  We did get to just see one of the most star-filled night skies I've seen with my naked eye and then we got to look through a smaller telescope at a couple of cool objects in space like the lagoon nebula and the Sagittarius cluster.  Anyway, it got me thinking about telescopes, and so I wrote this little ditty.

Hey there telescope
Whatcha looking at tonight?
All the stars are shining brightly
Blazing their celestial trails
Navigating without fail
Through the vast reaches of space
Stretching across the Milky Way

Hey there telescope
Your gaze rests so far away
Doesn't matter what today was
Like here on this little Earth
Things get better, things get worse
Doesn't matter much at all
Compared to the cosmic sprawl

Peering at an asteroid
As it tumbles through the void
Light from distant galaxies
Reaching across infinity

Hey there telescope
Looking out through space and time
Wonder what else you might find
Something never seen before
On some otherworldly shore
In far reaches of Creation
Things beyond imagination

When I listen to your tracks, I can picture music videos made of cut paper. Something that captures the magic of childhood, curiosity, excitement, the magic of spending the afternoon running through the woods on BMX bikes and going back for chocolate ice creams. That mountain sounds fantastic! I need to check it out. The final guitar ostinato is beautiful.

From under the sea to the mountain top during one vaccination sounds really impressive. I feel jealous, cause I am sitting at home in my vaccination right now and it is raining outside. So I am happy to hear about your adventure in this lovely track and the fantastic backstory. This was a great philosophical contemplation about telescopes being humanized. Thank you for all the good vibes you send.

Maybe it wasn't intentional but I like how the opening lyric sorta emulates ELO's Mr. Blue Sky with "Hey there telescope".  Also totally agree with Kedbreak136, this feels like I should be on my bmx (RAD!) cruising down the mountain admiring the views all around.  Great work! That vacay sounded like an awesome trip.

Did you ever watch the kid's show "The Adventures of Pete & Pete"? I don't know why, but this feels like it would be right at home during a section where they are up to mischief while building a rocket ship in their back yard.
Lovely vibe, awesome to hear that the trip to Hawaii had such an awesome effect.

i love how much inspiration you were able to draw from this trip, sounds truly magical! what a fun romp through the stars.
that low guitar that comes in towards the end is so cool. first listen my volume was down a bit, and it almost sounded like Scott Spillane was over there blasting out some brass  smile

Great tune, and I'm so jealous of your trip!

what a great concept and story built from a vacation excursion. So fun!

Rad lyrics and the layering is pretty rad. The synth entering in was a rad addition too.

Sounds like a lovely trip, it is quite amazing what can be found when you are able to escape the concrete jungle. I pictured all of nature frolicking under the stars and enjoying the moment, oblivious to the mental trappings of time.

I would for sure like to see one of those music videos!  Mauna Kea is definitely worth visiting if you're ever in Hawaii.  They do warn you about the possibility of altitude sickness though, as it's nearly 14,000 feet high.  I did okay with it, but my wife and father-in-law  needed some hits of oxygen.  Still totally worth it.

It was a nice range of magical places.  It's funny they actually tell you not to scuba dive for 24 hours before going up the mountain as there's apparently a possibility of getting the bends!

Not intentional, but I do love Mr. Blue Sky, so perhaps a subconscious homage!

I've heard of that show, but never seen it.  I think it was just a little bit after my time as far as watching kid's shows.  I read a little bit about it though, and it sounds pretty cool.  Sounds like I missed out.

There were for sure several magical experiences that were notably different from each other.  I think I could probably draw some more inspiration for a few more songs (and still might do so).  Gotta love a Scott Spillane reference.  Elephant 6 forever!

Thanks!  It was definitely amazing.  Overall 2024 hasn't been the best year for me, but that week was something special.

Thanks!  It was hard not to get inspired by giant telescopes and starry night skies.  They were very cool to see.

Thanks for your rad comment!  Much appreciated.

I wish I could get away from the grind more often.  There's a lot of beauty to be found out there and Hawaii definitely has an abundance of it.
