Heatstroke Interlude

By Cosmic Cairns on June 27, 2018 10:11 pm

I'm trying to record a track and listen to this week's tracks all on the one semi-light day I have in what's already been a hell week at work.  It actually started last Friday with what unexpectedly turned into a 17 hour long work day.  On top of that we were in the midst of an extreme heat warning and my job decided to make me go push around a bunch of heavy equipment outside.  Since I had started the day at 4am I was in kind of a zombie mode and forgot to bring water bottles.  When I finally found a water fountain I felt like I was about to dry up into sandpaper and I made what was probably a mistake of guzzling water down.  All of a sudden my stomach started doing flips and my body felt like it needed to evacuate from every possible exit as soon as possible.  I also started getting dizzy and felt like I was going to faint.  What followed was four solid days of extreme churning guts and physical exhaustion.  I spent my whole weekend either in bed or the bathroom and it was a highly unpleasant experience.  I'm pretty sure I got a touch of heat exhaustion coupled with some serious dehydration.  It was a highly unpleasant experience and I do not recommend it.

Then on Monday I still wasn't feeling good but tried to tough my way through work anyway.  And that was when said equipment decided to completely break down and I ended up spending an extra three hours trying to figure out how to fix it while my stomach was doing backflips and I felt like falling over.  Well, the good news is I finally feel better, the equipment issues are resolved, but my damn work decided to pull a "Yeeeeaaah.  We're going to need you to go ahead and come in this Saturday as well, mmmkay?  Great."

So today's been all right at least.  I wasn't feeling super inspired but it seemed it would be my only chance to record.  Before I even played anything I was originally going to title this "My Objectively Worst Track of the Year So Far" but actually I kind of like it.  I started out just strumming a c# minor chord on the electric guitar for about a minute and a half.  I played around that with a few more electric guitar parts and then added a bass line and a couple tracks of microkorg.  Sorry if I'm behind on listening to your guys's tracks.  I'm trying my best to catch up today.  Hopefully you've all had a much better week than me and hopefully next week will be better.

This has the "suspended in aspic" feeling induced by extreme heat stress. So, well done.

Very intense wall of sounds. Lots of texture and melody. I like the that filtered choppy sound that fades in and out giving a taste of rhythm.  The pitch bend at the end is the bomb!

Sounds like a super shitty week. Sorry to hear that... your story was scaring the shit out of me. You definitely had heat exhaustion and what we used to call sun poisoning (back in Florida). Fuck these motherfuckers. Time for a new job? Hope this is a better week.

Dude, I'm glad you're better. It sounds like you went through hell! Nice track. It went really well with your story. : )

Thanks!  I was trying to kind of "aurally" capture the heat feeling.

Thanks!  The pitch bend was sort of a spur of the moment decision but ended up being one of my favorite parts.  There's definitely times when I'm ready to say screw it and walk away from my job, but I don't really have anything better lined up at the moment.  My schedule can be fairly variable so shitty weeks at least get offset by some weeks that aren't too bad.  When it sucks, it sucks hard though.

Yeah, it pretty much sucked.  I guess I got this track out of it though.  That's something.

Glad to hear you better now... sorry that i wished you lots of sun for this week yikes
The track is nice and definitly far away from bad. I really like what you pulled out of the microKorg.
Could be a bit longer for a bit of hypnosis wink

thinking cool thoughts for you

stay safe & hydrated!

A little sun isn't bad, but it's definitely good to avoid getting too much.  Yeah, I agree this could be longer but I didn't have a ton of time and just needed to knock something out for the week, so I kept it short.

Thanks!  And I'm being much more conscious about staying hydrated now.  smile

Glad you're feeling better. After reading the intro I think I can hear the heat in the music, it's got a certain intense hypnotic feel to it.

I was trying to capture a little of the "heat" feeling.  I guess it's kind of abstract, but at least it's what I was thinking of as I recorded it.  smile

Sounds like rough experience! I like the song, could be soundtrack to a hot tense scene. Sometimes good sounds come from hard experiences though.

Those extra guitar parts keeping the pace in the mix really add to the huge wall of guitar.  Especially fond of that ending filtry part.  One of my favs!

Yeah, no fun.  But you've got to use your experiences good and bad for inspiration, right?

Thanks!  I was hoping the layers coming in would sort of simulate the rising intensity of the heat.
