Dust Devil

I can't believe we're already at the halfway point!  Okay, we just gotta do everything we just did one more time.  smile

This week I decided to re-visit a song I originally wrote back in 2007.  It was part of a pseudo-concept album I did back then called "Swelter" that was sort of about deserts and heat.  As we're starting to get some hot temperatures around here, it got me thinking about it again.  I always liked this song, and I remember playing it live a few times back in the day.  I wanted to see what I could do with it now.  I tried to stay pretty true to the original arrangement, just with the added benefit of what I've learned about recording music in the intervening years.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The other day when I saw you walking past my window
Then fade away reminded me of all the things I didn't know
The wind stirred up and it seemed like the palm trees were kissing
So I backed up, knew that there was something I was missing

Still it's so strange
Summer days float away
Summer days float away
Float away

Dust storm blew in still they come and go without no warning
Went for a swim 'cause it was already hot this morning
The a.c. quit, I was burning up in my apartment
Til sunset came brought along the welcome cooling darkness

Still it's so strange...

Welp that's two weeks in a row prof.jwh taught me a new word cuz yes I agree the melody and the uplifting feel of all the instruments coming together is such a warm positive sound.  Super catchy chorus too! Well done!  Happy Halfway!! \m/

What a sweet tune! Super strong pop song structure with an awesome melody and lovely upbeat summer-vibe lyrics. Wouldn't have minded another round of the chorus at then end!

i volunteer to play drums in your live band, i just need a ride

harmonica HIT - so good

the melodic rollercoaster of the verse is so good

you GOTTA put "ebullient" in the press kit!!! smile

omg the saw omg

"I heat up. I can't cool down." Agree with everyone that this has one of your nicest melodies. But also, the walkdown in the verse melody has a wistful feel that matches the "lost love" lyrics. That wistful feel gets amplified by the nice harmonica line in the second verse (I really like the tremolo in the harmonica on the third chord of the verse!). The transition from the harmonica to the mellotron strings in the second chorus is so smooth! And the singing saw and silly backing vocals made me smile at the end. It's a strange delight to think of a time you were kinda sad and uncomfortable but remember it fondly

Love to revisit songs. Swaying and smiling here. Floating away on a summer day is the best. Ebullient indeed! Making my summer day brighter. Love the instro at the end, and SAW!

what a delightful summer bop! yay sawwwwww!!!

Ebullient is indeed a good word.  I might have to utilize it in a future song.  Thanks for listening!

Music lessons and vocabulary lessons.  You can learn a lot from this place and the awesome contributors.  Thanks for listening!

Yeah, this one's pretty short.  I probably could have squeezed in another chorus or possibly even another verse, but sometimes I figure it's good to leave them wanting more.

Deal!  Drums always seem to be the hardest element for me to pin down when trying to put together a live act.  It was definitely time to get the saw out.  This is its first appearance in 2026.  That was in large part to my cello bow being inaccessible to me for several months as I detailed in a previous post.  But we should hear the saw again sooner or later now.

It's kind of funny you mention that because even at the time I originally wrote this song, I hadn't lived in an apartment for over six years, so I was already looking back fondly on another time.  Between this and Blueshire that I revisited earlier this year, I'm maybe starting to sense an unconscious pattern.  Apparently I get nostalgic for my old nostalgic songs.  And sometimes I get nostalgic for sad and uncomfortable feelings.

I always felt this was a very "summer" song and with summer hitting full force I started thinking about it again.  Thanks for listening!

Summer bops are among my favorite kind.  I'm sure the saw will be back before too long.  It was long overdue to make an appearance.

Sick summer vibes.
