Different Moons

By Cosmic Cairns on March 9, 2022 9:30 pm

I feel like people have probably always been divided to a certain extent, but these days the level of division is just crazy to me.  There are a lot of people out there that I just profoundly disagree with, and the frustrating thing is I don't see any way to bridge the gap.  It's honestly like we're living in different realities.  So lyrically in this song I was just kind of marveling at that.  I'm not trying to present any kind of argument like I'm right and you're wrong.  I'm just kind of shaking my head at how differently people can see things.

On the music side, I pulled out my cello for the first time this year.  I can't deny that I felt pretty rusty on it, but it also did feel good to get it under my fingers again.  I'll for sure have to bust it out again soon.  I was toying with having a beat come into this, but I tried out a couple different ones and wasn't super thrilled with them, so I ended up deciding to just leave the beat out.  I think it works okay without it.  Otherwise there's some acoustic guitar and a little bit of synths in there.  The bass parts are sometimes handled by the cello and sometimes with a bass guitar.  I think that's pretty much it.

It seems the sky is everywhere
Wherever you go it's always there
And we're all breathing the same air
So I thought

When you look up to see the view
A different moon shines down on you
And what you see I have no clue
I do not

I may not understand you
Couldn't change your mind at all
We're clearly not on the same page
Or in the same book at all

Where I see red do you see blue?
When I say false do you say true?
Do different voices talk to you
All night?

Do other stars shine in your sky?
And do you ever wonder why
We just can't see things eye to eye?
So who's right?

Maybe there is no clear truth
No objective facts at all
The world's full of contradictions
Can we coexist at all?

There's no consensus
And there's no common ground I see
There's no coming together
At all

I guess there'll always be some
Canyon keeping us apart
Different moons shine down on us
Different truths speak to our hearts

A live cello! That's something we don't hear enough on WB! Great libraries still can't beat a real cello with all the life that vibrates in it.

Nice theme for the track, so very appropriate.

My cello waits since years to be played. I wish I could integrate it as beautifully as you did in this song.
But I would need days or month to hit the right spots on the fretboard  again. But, it is fact, a cello has such a nice vibration that you feel, while playing it. I should go for it as soon as possible.
You're just a fraction of a step close to "God only knows" by the beach boys musically, your songwriting is pretty on the top in this early year. Your theme discribes an obvious phenomena of our contemporary civilization, that should be seriously investigated...... this division really sucks.

I will say virtual strings have come a long ways and sound pretty dang good these days, but I agree it's still nice to have a real live cello when you can.  Since I've got one, I may as well use it sometimes.

You should totally pull your cello out.  I'm sure you could get some cool sounds and textures from it, if nothing else.  I agree, the hardest part when I'm out of practice is hitting the right spot on the fretboard.  I seem to get better at that the more I play it, so I'll have to bring it out again sooner rather than later.  I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it but there's a lyrical and musical similarity to "God Only Knows" especially with "I may not understand you" and "I may not always love you."  Maybe my subconscious did that.  I agree, this mega division really sucks.

That cello is such a nice touch!

Thanks!  I've been looking for an opportunity to pull it out this year and this song seemed like a good fit for it.

Great song, the cello is great, love the lyrics and the theme here. I relate to the theme, perfect title for it. It has happy sound to me, but I can't help but think its a little sad that there are such big differences ... The song makes me think maybe there's a place of acceptance for the reality of these differences?

so nice to hear the cello!
all the little parts knit together beautifully
the lyrics... sigh...

I wonder about that place of acceptance.  I feel like people having some differences of opinion isn't a terrible thing in and of itself.  If no one ever disagreed about anything we wouldn't have any scientific advancement and we'd still think the sun revolved around the Earth.  I think the real problem is how entrenched everyone is and unwilling to listen to anything that challenges their worldview.  Everyone's just kind of in an echo chamber that tells them what they want to hear and I feel like there's gotta be some way to break through that.  But heck if I know how.

Thanks!  It was really good to pull the cello out again.  I can only sigh as far as the lyrics are concerned, too.  Thanks for another awesome gif!

The cello is a much welcomed return! Matches up so nicely with the bass. Lovely dreamy progression with a tinge of regret. More lament than frustration.

Yeah, it was time to bust out the cello for sure.  Lament is a great word to describe this.  That's exactly the kind of feeling I was going for.

These lyrics really resonate with me. Love the way the cello fits into the song. There's a kind of a Travis-esque feel to the instrumentation that I really like, but the vocals are all you. Great work. smile

Thanks!  Haven't heard Travis in a long time.  Might have to put them on later.

Disinformation really is the bane of society, it's so sad.

Nice hearing the cello again, and everything is almost entirely on-tempo too.

I agree the Cello has such a nice organic feel to it.  With the guitar and piano backing it up the song for me sort of took on a campfire sing along.  Really cool and relatable lyrics.  Nice work!

It's really made the world a worse place.  I'm sure there's always been a certain level of disinformation, propaganda, and media bias, but I feel like there used to be a LOT more journalistic integrity.  At the very least it seemed like everyone could agree on the basic facts, even if we felt differently about them.  Now we can't even do that anymore.

I could see playing this around a campfire, although hauling the cello out to one would be a little awkward.  Doable though.  smile

such a beautiful tune, such a great sentiment.  the cello is as mournful as you are.

My friend recommended a book to me (which I did not read) but the title is: "The Sociopath Next Door" - about how surprisingly common of a situation it is.  There's no negotiating with a person without a conscience.

not sure what to do about that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That sounds like an interesting book.  I might have to check it out.  I agree there's no negotiating and I don't know what to do either.  I wish there were easy answers.

Beautiful arrangement, definitely like the cello! I also think "lament" works well for this one.

Thanks!  I agree about the lament description.

Another very well written song.  Im glad to be catching up on all of these.  Love the cello.

Thanks!  I need to get some more cello in some more songs this year.  Glad you got a chance to catch up and hope things are going well for you!
