Count Olaf's Happy Place

By Cosmic Cairns on October 19, 2022 6:56 pm

I was feeling the Halloween vibe this week and wanted to do something that felt thematically appropriate.  I came up with what felt like a sort of spooky melody on the cello and used that as the basis.  I added a couple more cello parts and a touch of synths.  I also found some free Halloween sounds online including some creepy laughter and sprinkled that on.

It's spooky, but where's the saw, the spookiest of instruments?

Good question.  For some reason I didn't feel like using the saw this week, although it probably would fit well with this.  Maybe I'll go back and add some later.

what a beautiful wide open mix in stereo. all the instruments and spooky sounds crawl out of my speakers. you did a a very good recording. I miss your vocals, too. when you go back for the saw, can you sing a few la-la-laas, please?

Thanks  I think this is the longest I've gone on any WB without doing any vocals on a track.  I didn't intend to go so long, but I got sick for a couple weeks and even after I started to feel better I had a lingering cough that made it hard to sing.  There will be vocals on next week's track for sure though.

The cello scrapes through the mix with screaming beauty so elegantly, pure emotive excellence smile

great job, the laughs really took it to the next level, i was actually thinking "creepy FX might be good here" - nice!

count olaf image search yielded this - lol

Cello and guitar sound excellently spooky!  The cello fx especially add to the theme and tone.  Nice work!

Oh I like that cello sound. What a splendind instrument the cello is. So much sould and it can convey such weariness. I like that main theme, it's dark but with overdoing it. The glissandos are awesome! Love it.

Thanks!  Cellos are definitely good for that sort of thing.

LOL.  It was just a name I came up with that sounded kind of creepy, but that guy doesn't look too far off from what I imagined.

Thanks!  The cello is pretty effective at creating a spooky sound I think.

Cellos really are pretty impressive.  They're great at conveying emotion and have a wonderful tone.  I definitely appreciate it a lot more now than when I was playing in school orchestras as a kid.

ooooh yay count olaf - dig the cello!

i don't think he understands about musical saws...

I assume back when he was among the living Count Olaf was probably some rich aristocrat who never touched or laid eyes on a saw in his entire life.  But he was a fan of cellos for sure.

I can picture the count ... yes he's quite the character. Love the cello and saw work, great melody!
