Casual Ties

By Cosmic Cairns on May 1, 2026 6:39 pm

I have a notebook where I jot down random ideas that pop into my head.  Then sometimes when I need an idea for a WB track or whatever later on, I'll skim through it and see if anything piques my interest.  Sometime a while back I had written "Casual Ties".  I'm pretty sure I was making a play on words on "casualties" but I decided to focus on the idea of casual ties as I started to come up with lyrics, and then let them go where they wanted to go.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Unseen tethers fraying so slowly
Barely noticed the distance was growing
Carried away with the tide

Continents drift forming new mountains
Rise between us can't go around them
Tectonic plates shift with us

Bright blazing fires soon tepid and cold
Valuing new things discarding the old

Birds are flying over the treetops
Soar on til the temperate wind stops
Guiding them to fertile shores

You've been waiting here for me
Down in the dumps
With half opened eyes

Always knew we had something
Far more profound
Than casual ties

We crossed paths for a reason
Long time ago
It wasn't just chance

I hear hints in the wind of
A lovely song
Would you like to dance?

Empty highways stretching out ahead
Leading nowhere let's stay here instead
Under the vast onyx skies

And the Earth spins bringing new events
But I'd rather stay in this moment
Held here by casual ties

Love the uplifting vocal harmonies and epic world escaping adventure you take us on.  \m/ Awesome work!

For a second I thought this was going to be about the stylish item of neck-wear. Slightly disappointed it wasn't about a new casual version of the famed formal piece of clothing, but this song was still very good so I am a satisfied customer!
Great stuff, keep it up!

wow, what a journey! guided along by those excellent melodies. love this one.

This song takes me all sort of places.
Digging the multiple directions it takes, yet feeling really consistent!
Loving the string sounds!

Wow, what a journey! Lovely song with so many heartfelt elements. It goes off into another dimension in the bridge, so far that I was not expecting it to go back. Awesome work!

Always like a minisuite. The first section has an almost New Romantic vibe with the chorused vox and guitar. Guitar duet and zapping synth transitions sound especially nice. Second section has a fun 60s-revival vibe with the ba-ba backing vocals and your catchiest vocal melody. Then the dance: star-glean synths and waltzing guitars in a moment that starts intimate and innocent, but fades into melancholy. The relationship is too faded to sustain the dance. But we end on hope, not regret. The tempo picks back up into the reprise. Sure, the ties are not as strong as they were, but they're still there, still worth sitting with, together

really nice, its a three WB's for the price of one love it!

Lol!  I didn't think about neck-wear at all, probably because I've been largely traumatized by the times I've had to wear neckties.  I can't really fathom putting one on in a casual setting.  But who knows?  Maybe some innovator can come up with a way to make them comfy to hang around in the house in.

Thanks!  I threw some decent sized curveballs into this one, so glad to hear it feels consistent.  It all made sense to me at least when I was doing it.  smile

Thanks!  I very nearly ended it with the instrumental section, but something was drawing me back to the beginning.  It feels a little more complete to me that way, I think.

Thanks!  I think this is a very solid analysis and I do find that ties often still exist with our past even if it's been a while since they've been utilized.

It kind of is.  But it all came out at once so I think it goes together.

Love the melody and harmonies, happy happy. Guitar leads so tasty. Oh tempo change right? Or just feel, cool change, and the ba ba ba's ... yes! The change breakdown middle is cool. Soaring. A Cosmic track for sure!

Thats some dark wordplay!

Really uplifting and a dramatic change up. Good stuff!

I like your use of reverb, it definitely adds that perfectly cosmic touch to the momentum that carries everything so positively forward with this heart-warming mystical vibe. So lovely! Also, i like the guitar solos being punctuated with that harmonic accent to it... hard to describe in words, but right before the tempo-change, which was also so perfectly place, it all lends to the magical spirit, so perfectly heart

Thanks!  Definitely went on a bit of a journey with this one.

It is a little dark, but I decided to focus more on the casual ties rather than the casualties.  Hopefully that kept thing a bit lighter.

Thanks!  We can all probably use a little uplift.

Thanks!  I like reverb a lot in general, but sometimes it feels difficult to me to get the right level of it.  But sometimes the magical spirit makes its presence known!
