1st and Bensonhurst

This is a song that was written by my friend Bobby Bergland.  I'm not sure exactly when he wrote it, but I first heard him play it more than twenty years ago, and I always really liked it.  I hadn't heard it in a long time, but I got it stuck in my head recently, so I wrote him and asked if he had any recordings of it I could listen to.  It turned out he had recorded a version under the name Eddy Highway with our fellow WBer cfurrow.  After listening to it, I got a crazy idea and asked him if he would mind if I took a crack at covering it. He replied "I wish you would," so here's my humble attempt at it.

I would definitely recommend checking out the original version.  You can find it here: https://eddyhighway.bandcamp.com/track/ … ensonhurst

I can see how this gets stuck in your...oh wait, what's this? It's stuck in my head now.

Awesome smile

Fine fine guitars. Beautiful multi octave acrobatic singing and a great earworm factor. Who was the drummer?

super catchy, that melody just don't quit! gonna have to check out the original too  big_smile
your voice sounds great

dude your voice is so good on this, maybe best ever???

shoutout to cfurrow!

funny, the original sounds like a cosmic cairns song to me.  or whatever genre apparently you and your crew have created!

psych indie swing-folk?

Wow, this is amazing! You went all out and I love it.

This has such great "American indie folk rock" energy, I love it. Really really great job covering your friend's work. And I feel lucky to have listened to this smile

Very tasteful cover of a really solid original. I went ahead and listened to the original inspiration and your take really hits the mark.

Very cool and nice vibes…i agree that your vocals here is one of your best performances so far. I also like those slidong guitars in the middle eight (or is it actually a chorus?). The short guitar solo also works fine. Great!

Love that opening melody. A very cool song! I’m sure the original artist would be proud of your cover. I’m having a great time with it too. big_smile

The voice indeed sounds great. A nice traditional rock arrangement, a great tribute!

Nitpick: the guitar is quite out of sync with the drums at times, not sure what happened there.

Jolly fun, vocals indeed sound good. I nice song, cool you covered it!

Awesome vocals!  Catchy melodies and love when it changes up at the 1:39 mark. A hopeful and anthemic song.  I'm glad you were able to cover it after so many years.

Nice cover! I am vibing with the sounds you're putting from 1:40. I don't know why but it reminds me of the beach boys though it does not really sound anything like them. Maybe the voice harmonies or the positive vibe? Not sure why but enjoying it!

That's my old friend the virtual drum kit.

Thanks for listening!  Bob's a great singer, so I had to try my best to even sort of live up.

Thanks!  I felt some pressure to try to give a little something extra to the singing this week.  Back in the early 00's, we used to hang out a lot and pass a guitar around and sing songs we wrote to each other.  Cfurrow and I had a lot of crossover in our music taste.  I remember a few big disagreements on certain bands with Bobby, but there was also a decent amount of common ground as well.  Regardless, I'm sure we all influenced each other as well.  Those were some fun times.

Seems like an apt description.  We definitely were following the folk tradition of singing songs with an acoustic guitar.  Additionally I listened to a ton of indie rock back in the day and have always enjoyed psychedelic sounds.  The swing probably weaseled itself in there somehow.

Thanks!  You guys laid out a great blueprint to follow.

Thanks!  I wasn't sure if I could do it justice, but I wanted to give it a try.

Yeah, I don't know if there's a true chorus to the song, but it works well!  I tried to capture the feel of the original guitar solo without doing an exact replication of it.

I had a chance to get his reaction.  I think he was thrilled to hear a cover version of his song.  I agree, there is something neat about that.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks!  I will take a closer listen to those guitars and maybe try to adjust for future mixes.

Thanks for listening!  I'm not a huge covers guy, but I felt the urge to do this one.

Thanks!  It doesn't feel like it was that long ago when I first heard it, but it's really been a bit of time.  It was really nice to revisit this song though.

I know my friend Bobby is a huge Beach Boys fan, so it wouldn't surprise me if a little of that vibe found its way in here.  Thanks for listening!
