Under the Stars

By Chrisfoo on January 30, 2022 7:43 pm

This one was quite a struggle for me.  I attempted it last year and couldn't get it to work, got pretty bent out of shape about how much time I wasted on it too.  This time was no different, but I forced myself to finish it and it actually came out a bit better than I expected.  I like a lot of the music but I will never be able to sing it well enough in this key to want to release it, and transposing it sounds awful.  But oh well, at least I'm done with it now.  I had a little experiment, it didn't work out, so now I want to go back to the way things were before the experiment.

Lyrics:

I am astray without a guide
I burned down the bridge I crossed to to get inside
To lose myself here
Till the shadows are drown out by the light

Lost here, with nothing to engrain
Added to the list of things I cant explain
I ask myself:  Am I running out of time?

Sunset leaves light
That gives us eyes to see whats hidden in the night
If I lost my way, I know I wont be far
Because I’ve got sky to guide me when I’m under the stars

You dont know me like you feel
I’ve been getting lost at night to try and find whats real
To find myself here
Before I’m swept out by the light

Sunset leaves light
That gives us eyes to see whats hidden in the night
If I lost my way, I know I wont be far
Because I’ve got sky to guide me when I’m under the stars

Nice song.  The backing vocals are topnotch, dig the vocal effects, some epic guitar work and a special shoutout to that awesome noise at the beginning.

I love how you made cool use of the higher registers right from the start of this track onward. Neat stuff!

Very nice song! As cosmiccairns mentioned, great backing vocals. I love the guitar lines during the singing sections. Nice guitar solo as well! Loved it.

always a treat - keep experimenting and making the good good

When you sang "To lose myself here"....I was sold

Really neat (bitcrushed?) vocal fx! I think this track came out great smile

I've had stories like that, where something about them just bugs me but they still just need to be finished. Grats on getting across the line. smile

Also, the vocal effects are great and I really dig the lyrics.

I liked this a lot! Glad you put it out there!

Listening to it in a couple of months I am pretty sure you'll live fine with how those vocals are recorded.

Song sounds wide, I do like the vocals, synths, choice of drums sound.

really enjoyed this!

Great melodies! Really digging this. Favorited. Some tasty note choices in the guitar solo, and the synth solo fadeout works really well. And to echo what everyone else said, the vocal production is great. Cool effects on the vocals, the background vox sound insanely good.

Hey man, good to experiment and push the limits! I like the raw edge to the intro guitars and leads.  And you vocals are always dead on with lots of layers. I like how the tempo changes as well. I was playing your tracks for a friend of mine last week while and he asked if you are professional musician or engineer. I wasn't sure. You have great tracks. Do you work in a studio or production of some sort?

Glad you stuck with it, this is cool!

That guitar lead soars. Vocals sound great, nice song! I love it when songs have a double time part. Sometimes nice to circle all the way back to original idea, but experimentation is the journey.

Love the laid back feel of the drums with the bit crushy synths.  Gave me some old Postal Service vibes a lil there.  The upbeat change sounds great with the guitar melody and pulsing bass.  Oooh nice stutter effect.  So many nice added touches that give this track a complete sound.  Ohh yais 8bit lead outro! smile

this track throws me back to wonderful vibes of anamanaguchi and ratatat! Well done and keep it coming! (the melodic guitar is absolutely ace)

The moment when the vocals hit is amazing. It really does capture that vibe of a wide open desert plain on a clear night heart

love that bold guitar riff
love the oooooohs
love the ring modulation
love the chill tempo then beat pick up for the solo

as someone who can't hear what's in your head - i'm just taking this song at face value and there's nothing about your vocal performance that makes me go "oh, too bad there's not another singer" - i'm hearing you hit the notes, portraying some emotion - i know (for me) when I can't really hit notes, the performance makes it a little fragile, or tentative - but that also plays into the emotional delivery.  so, to me, if you sing "to lose myself here" in a gentle, fragile delivery, it def. seems like it works for the whole point of the song.

my two cents! smile

Thanks dude!  The thing at the beginning is just a tremolo effect with the rate increasing till the intro hits.  I've very much enjoyed automating tremolo the last couple years, you can get some wild sounds with it.

Thanks!  Yeah, I wasn't sure if that lead would be too distracting in the chorus so glad to hear you dig it.

Thanks man!  And thanks for the giant.  He is within us all.

Haha, thanks for mentioning that.  Its like literally the only vocal line that I felt good about.  A lot of this song is right on or around my break, so it was really difficult for me to sing.

Thanks!  There's some bit crush in there, and the rest is a bit of a mystery actually.  I used a plugin called called Misby by Freakshow Industries and the parameters are given abstract names.  You can definitely get weird with it though, lots of fun.  I used that to mask the really shitty vocal lines though, haha.

Thanks man, yeah it felt really good to put this one to rest!

Thank you!  Yeah, I think I'd like it too if I could muster a better vocal performance.  I think I'm going to work on that actually and maybe re-release it later.

Yeah, I did a pretty considerable amount of processing to get them to sound like they do, so they came out not terrible for the most part.  Still would feel better about it if could perform it better though.  Thanks for the comments though!  I actually automated some pretty drastic spectral imaging on the choruses, so glad to hear they sound wide!

Thanks dude, much appreciated!  Thanks for sharing my music too, that's really awesome.  Also, very flattered but not a professional musician.  Did the rock band thing in my 20s, play for a wedding band now, but am still relatively new to production.  Glad to hear that my stuff sounds decent enough, because I'm sure like many of us, I constantly doubt that it does.

Thanks man!  Glad you like that guitar lead, that's my favorite part of this one.

Yeah that's weird, I wasn't getting any Postal Service vibes from this one, but now that you mention it I can see it.  Glad you like that double time bridge too, although I keep thinking that I ripped off that transition and beginning of the guitar solo from a War on Drugs song, but I'm too scared to go look for it haha.  Thanks for listening though man, glad you like it.

Thanks dude!  I didn't have desert in mind when I was writing it, but that imagery definitely work here.

Thanks man, I appreciate it!  But to be fair, I did cover up the really bad vocal parts with the demonic effects haha!  I actually did decide that I want to work on the vocal part for this one more though.  Its on/around my break though (transposing isn't really an option if I want to keep the current instrumentation), so its quite challenging for me since I'm very much still learning to sing.  I appreciate the feedback though!

Maaan, I've been so slack with my weeklybeats listening, but this is the perfect way to get back in the swing of it. Such a solid and well thought out track. Love that change of feel in the bridge section.

beautiful…!!!

The guitar adds a sweet quality to the track. I like how it gives energy while providing a tenderness.
