The Meaning of Life (v2)

By Chrisfoo on July 5, 2020 11:50 pm

I spent most of the week recreating this track that I uploaded here near the beginning of the year to get it album ready.  I rerecorded the vocals, some of the synth parts, and the acoustic guitar.  Rearranged some of the existing bass parts, added in some electric guitar that my cousin tracked (leads in the 2nd half), and remixed the whole tune for the most part.  Still need to master. Let me know if anything sounds off to you.

**Looks like I can re-upload the track, but I just realized that some of the vocal audio clips were cutting out.  Sorry about that.

The arrangement is really nice. Good choice of bass tone and very tasty guitars. There are also great vocal melodies there. Very cool nostalgic vibe. I like that song.
It's my personal preference but sometimes i wish i could hear the vocals (and backing vocals) a bit better? I am not sure if it's the acoustic guitar and synth layers fighting for frequencies with the vocals.

and the chorus is stuck in my head now. smile

The warmth of the electric guitar is so nice. Anything special done to get that sound?

Love songs with this kind of vibe.

Thanks man, I'm glad you're digging this one.  Thanks for the feedback on the vocals getting masked by the synth and acoustic too.  I just went in and carved out a little EQ space from them and it definitely sounds better already.

Haha, thats a good sign!

Thanks man, glad you like it.  This guitar tone was modeled in Logic just using the stock plugins.  If you use Logic, you can get this with the Silverface amp & 2x12 cab and a big reverb send.  There's some light compression and saturation on the main track as well.

I hear so many great bands in this track, who are some of your influences? Great stuff, keep it up!

I'm a big fan of this one, man. I can tell you've worked hard on this ... there's so much detail and flavor. Great lyrics, great arrangement, great performance (especially the lead guitar). I really like the transition at 1:52.

A smooth track. I really like how its arranged and how the instruments complement each other. I'm going to use this as an example of how to improve my compositions.
Suggestion: up the vocals somewhere from 1.5-3db (Your voice in "Observe" is a good example of how to bring out the voice). In this track, I feel like you're sitting behind everything, and it takes away from the clarity and impact of your voice, which I agree should blend in with everything at a similar level of volume/presence.

Very nice overall vibe throughout.  Excellent guitar work.  It just flows really well and creates a nice smooth experience.

Sounds beautiful in my Bose headphones. Everything is clear and well balanced. Love those layered vocals with the offset higher range vocals in the background. Really adds depth and a special quality to the song. The guitar parts have a subtle country feel that is also reflected in the bass playing.  Well paired.

Hoooodamn. This is a solid track, with some great vocals. Nice work!!!

Wow what a beautiful tune. Good job! There seems like so much atmosphere going on. This tune was really a nice journey, and there's something gentle about the way the sounds sit in the mix. Wish I could get some tips tongue

Dude, I've got no idea what influenced this to be honest.  Never really written anything like it.  Japanese Breakfast, Dawes and Father John Misty kinda come to mind if you listen to any modern indie rock.

Thanks man, glad you like it!  That turnaround was a complete accident by the way, just put the midi notes in the wrong spot (D, Daug, D).

Awesome, thanks man!  Good call on the vocals too, @kedbreak136 mentioned that as well and I can definitely see it.  I will for sure work to unbury them tonight.

Awesome man, thanks!  I was on the fence about those pitch shifted harmonies, glad they sounds okay.

Thanks man, I appreciate it!

hell of a rework.  this one sounds more studio quality whereas the first version has sort of a "big hall reverb" live sound to it.  this is a great track.  is the new chorus and end harmonies just vox or did you use some sort of vocoder effect to it?  sounds great man.  id love to export this wav and see if the volume can be cranked up a bit, but than i read that you still are going to master it.  A+ dude, hope you had a good 4th weekend

Thanks man!  Haha, I dont know if I'm the best person for tips just yet.  I'm still in the phase where I just kind of hack away at the mix for hours/days and hope it works out.  I'm always happy to give an opinion though if you ever want to send something over.

Haha good call on the reverb man.  I wrote this song the week I DLed a bunch of free TAL reverb plugins so I for sure over did it on that.  Those harmonies are actually artificial (pitch shifted and formant compensated).  It was actually a glitch in the bounce that you can hear them at the beginning of some of the phrases but I couldnt reupload.  And yeah, good call on cranking it up.  Im going to start messing around with mastering today and see how it goes.  Had a great 4th, hope yours was too!

This sounds fantastic. Adore the guitar work, it's such a nice complement to your vocals. Beautiful piece of work. smile

Yeah, beautiful. The mix really fits the vocals perfectly. As mikememo said, this sounds like a tune you put a lot of thought and work into, it definitely shows! Great work heart

Compared to the other one, this one feels much more flat. The other one used the stereo space really well, this one feels like it's coming from a radio almost. Where'd the bass go?

Ahhhhhh fuck dude you're so right.  I just referenced it against the older version and I completely agree.  I'm playing around with the reverbs now to try and get that space back.  And I initially turned down the sub bass in the chorus to layer with an electric to try and add more power, but that backfired apparently.  I just corrected that.  Thanks for pointing this out man, much better to realize this now then after its released.

Nice! Epic tune man. Listening back to the last one, the mix definitely feels more cohesive, but yeah as Devieus mentioned, just missing a bit of 'presence' now. Sounds like you're on it though. Can't wait to hear it out in the real world!

Thanks man, I appreciate it.  Yeah, I still have some work to do with the mix but hopefully I'll have it figured out by the album release.

Excellent sounding guitars in this track.  The vocals sound awesome in the chorus along with the rest of the instrumentation.
