Raingun

By Chrisfoo on January 16, 2022 11:56 pm

Wishing I saved a bit more time to mix/master this one, but I got carried away with stuff that I probably shouldn't have.  I'll probably do a v2 later this year.  Was also hoping to add some vocal harmonies and try to do a cooler/cleaner lead guitar part at the end.   Still pretty happy with how the instrumentation and arrangement came out though.

Lyrics:

Down down comes the rain when you’re talking to me
The raingun makes the rust inside me

Water flowing like a river running into the sea
The rain falls from the clouds inside me

And I….I I I
dont want to see you
pass me by
dont want to see you
pass me by

Dissipate does the light when you’re looking at me
The raingun is the dark inside me

And I….I I
I think I know you
from a past life
I think I know you
from a past life

Down down comes the rain when you’re talking to me
The raingun makes the rust inside me

Now I’m a wreck on the sideline
Of this day dream, that I fell into

No one can tell me I’m wrong
That I should have known all alone

Now I’m scouring my mind
For things I should have said and have done

And whos gonna tell me I’m wrong?
Whos going to tell me Im wrong?

Fantastic songwriting. The melancholic tone here is totally striking.

This is so far from the music I usually enjoy listening to, but it hits real good

This one has a bit of a rustic Americana feel or something.  It's got a nice mellow vibe and the vocals sound great.

I absolutely love the guitar duo and the whole arrangement throughout the first part. I like the second part too, though it feels like a separate song to me. I also am intrigued by the image of a raingun. Thank you!

Beautiful track. The guitar playing is super good - precise and tasty. Cool work there, and it's all in the service of the song. I like the vocals, and the layering you do there. It brings a raw organic vibe to the track. More tracks like that (or not, you obviously do what you want smile )!

Great song, performance & production. Really like it - and cool bridge !

Love the acoustic guitar sound. Beautiful dreamy ambiance. Cool country song track with a twist. And damn at 3m30, this is quite a change of ambiance to electric. Almost feel like 2 songs in one.

Feels like it was quite a bit of work on this one. Congrats.

this is so lovely!

yes, just yes.

Same. I used to listen to this a lot more but it's been a while - you're making me nostalgic @chrisfoo!

Ooooh damn this sounds good.  The nostalgic "sitting out on a porch as the rain falls" feels.  Vocals sound excellent as always especially with those panned lines.  Very relatable lyrics "The rain falls from the clouds inside me"...   Oooh the drop into the next section was suhweet!  The vocal chorus with that lead guitar on the outro, *chefs kiss!*  Well done man!

whoa, this is really great guitar work.  WHOA KOTO.

WOW THE LAST THIRD

insanely strong effort!

Lovely

This is fantastic, man. You are off to a flying start and I love it.

Envious of that crisp plucky guitar sound. Nice picking sir! Love love that subtle trailing delay on the vocal. Man, really rallies at the end! Favorited.

I was digging this, then that last third I almost jumped out of my chair fist in the air! Geat end, love it when songs do that. Great work! Love the vocal!

The simplicity of this song is really sweet. It still feels like a track from you, but it hits the sweet spot for what I like.

Thanks!  Went through a lot of iterations to get to this one.

That's a good sign then!  Yeah, not the style I've been writing lately (at least the first part) but I think it works.

Yeah, definitely more of an Americana feel to it.  Almost Fleet Foxes-y.

Thanks!  Yeah I know, I realized that the 2nd part is so much like a separate song that I should have mixed and mastered them on different tracks.  Heard some major clipping on iPhone speaker in the 2nd half after I already submitted.

Thanks man!  Yes, I like the idea of doing more like this.  It was refreshing to not have to mix 10 different synths for once, haha.

Thanks!  Yeah, I'm happy with how the 2nd half hit.  Def need to remix it later in the year though.

Thanks dude!  Yeah, I didn't know if that panned vocal round part was going to be too lame but I appreciate you not booing me for it!

Thanks!  Yeah I'm slowly but surely making some progress on guitar.  My neanderthal bass player fingers are growing accustomed to the tiny strings.  Glad you like the eastern vibes too.  Its actually a free Kontakt instrument called a yangquin that I grabbed last year, but definitely does sound like a koto to me too.

Thank you!  I'm trying to force myself to do complete songs for as many weeks as possible.

Thanks man!  Guitar isn't my strong suit, so this definitely took awhile to track.  Glad to hear it sounds alright though!

I like this a lot, and I'll be pleasantly surprised when I hear it again.

Love it! I started off delighted by the fancy guitar lick after the first picking. Great guitar sound throughout! Then I realized I'm totally the guy in this song's lyrics so I felt it pretty strong big_smile

It was super nice to hear the bridge and ending, great composition. It feels like a good execution of Sting's advice from an interview where he explained how he always writes with an AB/bridge/C structure and the bridge is always kinda healing whatever issues are brought in the first part. Great singing too!

Damn all the songs you've been putting out are all so good. The mix here fits the vibe of the song imo.

Thanks man!  I'm looking forward to it too, lots of ideas to implement.

Haha, glad the lyrics resonated with you.  That's cool too about the structure.  I didn't realize that Sting uses that structure, the big one that comes to mind for me is Fleet Foxes.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks man, I appreciate it!  Yeah, honestly the mix didn't come out too bad for not having had time to do much to it (besides the clipping in the outro).

I don't want to see you pass me by

or

I don't want to see you. pass me by

cool little double meaning there in the lyrics smile I have def felt that feeling that those two together form
