Flat Earth (Spotify Release)(Almost)

By Chrisfoo on February 9, 2020 11:58 pm

Hey WB,

This week I decided to go back to one of my earlier tracks and work on adding a few more elements and dialing in the mix/master to get ready for release.  I also rerecorded the vocals, but I'm not done tweaking them so this version has the old ones still.

I know there's a lot of talented and experienced folks out there, so if any of you have some input on anything that I could improve on this track, I'd really appreciate the guidance (i.e. production, instrumentation, mix).

Damn dude, I could tell it was gonna be a good track right off the bat.  I think the production is great.  Really diggin' the vocals.  You have a great voice.  It's reminding me of someone but I can't place my finger on it.  Pretty cool ending too.

I'm certainly not as talented as a lot of the people on here but I have one suggestion...if I'm even right.  Did you use an auto tuner on the vocal tracks?  There were one or two parts where I thought I heard some auto tune "artifacting".  When I use auto tune I make sure to turn down the retune speed quite a bit and a lot of times I'll even turn down the volume of the overall plugin on the effects bus.  Not quite as effective but I think for a song like this you're not going for that T-Pain sound of quick retune speed.

Overall this is a great track you've got here.  Nice work!  I look forward to hearing this when you're "ready for release."

Haha, nailed it dude (except not autotune, flex pitch).  Yeah, I can never tell if the artifacts are super obvious, or if they're just noticeable to me because I've heard them 100 times while mixing.  Thanks for the feedback on that, it'll help motivate me to re-record a take instead of trying to fix it in flex.

Yeah I only caught one or two instances of it so the effect is still pretty subtle (and you're probably nailing the pitch anyways).  But you're definitely right; the more you listen to it, the more you're gonna catch.

Really though, I fuckin' love your voice.  Great vocals on this, dude.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.  And no way am I nailing the pitch, I need to do a lot of production to get my voice to sound the way it does on these tracks.  I started voice lessons this year though so we'll see where it goes.

Oh that's fuckin' awesome, man, good for you.  I've always wondered about taking vocal lessons and if it's something I should pursue.  I've watched a lot of vocal coaches on YouTube and picked up a few good techniques for warmups and expanding your pitch range.  Good luck with the lessons.

Cant wait to be able to stream this track man. I have a perfect playlist to give this song a good home.

Great song, beautifully sung and played.  No production notes from me but I liked reading the above discussion for technical pointers.  I'm somewhat familiar with flextune and time settings in Logic but never implemented on vocals.  Will need to give this a try.  Once again, great song, much enjoyed!

Thanks!  Yeah Flex is great, and is pretty subtle unless you completely bomb the vocal take (like I often do).

Honestly sounds pretty good, pretty much any suggestions I would make would be just personal preference stuff!

That's a sweet song, great vocal harmonies! I'm too green to give technical advice, but I can tell you it sounds good to me!

Great rework of the original track.  I really like the wobbly synth (my correct synths lingo is baaaad)  sounds you added towards the end before the solo.  This sing in particular  still gives sort of a California chill  vibe to me/ possibly a little Early 2000s British indie rock.  I’m loving this tune man. I’ll give it a few more listens the see if I have any constructive words in regards to mixing or such sorts from my ears.

Thanks for checking it out dude, glad you liked the new synth part.

This song's such a classic already, I reallllly dig it. Production wise, I think the mix is very good.

That extra synth in there is a nice touch. I'm not sure if I like the crunchier drums of the other better though, it gives it a little more power in the early parts.
I wish you could combine those two outros, the previous was a little more relaxed and quirky.

Really cool man! As many have said, its hard to pick out anything production-wise that really needs attention. The mix is great, everything seems to have found its own space perfectly in the frequency spectrum.
