Disappointing Diamonds

By Chrisfoo on November 22, 2020 11:56 pm

Trying to work on my mixed voice range so thought I'd rock this tribute song to do so.  Its getting there, still pretty rough.  Definitely needed to fix up a few spots with flex pitch, but what are you gonna do?

I basically finished my album this week, so that's beyond exciting. Just need to avoid the endless urge to tweak small details now, so I plan on submitting to Distrokid this week with a release date about 2 months out.  I'm going to try the whole blog and playlist pitching thing to see if I can get more like like 30 streams this time, so if anyone has experience with that I'd love to hear what you did.

I love the lyrics here! Your vocals are super clear smile

Congrats on finishing your album!!! Could you paste your Distrokid share link so that I can pre-save the Spotify release? I think it will help your rankings.

Wow, this is really ambitious vocalizations. Well done! Also, beautiful piano bass combo.

Vocals sound good to me.  The only part that was disappointing as far as I was concerned was it felt like it ended abruptly.  And, yes, congratulations and good luck on the album.  And if you hit on any magic tips please do share.  Getting anyone to actually listen is one of the hardest parts of this whole making music thing.

Yeah for sure, I'd love to be able to really nail vocal parts like this one day.  Thanks!

Thanks!  And yes, you're absolutely right.  You'd think in the streaming age (where music is essentially free) it'd be easier to get people to listen.

I love the section from 1:42 onwards with the added tension with the guitar. Great vocals there, and nice piano composition. The track sounds like it did end up a bit abruptly. By the way it's not the only track this week that I heard like this, I wonder if this was meant or if there is a bug in weeklybeats this week.

Best of luck on the distribution and marketing for your album!

Feels real good, not breaking new ground, but solid.

Congrats on your album. 1/3rd of the work starts now.

Excellent, very "british pop rock" vibe, which I like a lot. Congrats.

and yes sounds like it miss part of the song...

I really really love the vibe on this one! The vocals are done so well, man.

Btw how do you like distrokid. Are they a pretty reliable distributor?

Great song man! A fitting tune to wrap up ablum making time. Congrats on that!
Making some kind of mark in the streaming world seems like such an uphill battle, I wish you all the best (and happily got on that pre-save)!

Congrats on the album, that's really, really cool. I enjoyed this track a lot; it reminded me a lot of Oasis.

Thanks!  No, the ending wasn't due to a bug.  The original song by Father John Misty ends super abrupt like that too.  Although I probably should have allowed for some decay though and not cut the bounce at the end of the measure.

Dude I know, I've never been the marketing guy for any of the bands I've been in.  Just planning for it is already a lot of work.

Yeah, I think I definitely cut it off a bit abruptly!

Thanks man!  I was worried this was going to be too ambitious a cover for me to sing but glad to hear it worked out.

So far so good on Distrokid, I havent had any service issues with them at this point but I discovered a couple annoying things after signing up you should be aware of.  The standard $19.99/year plan has limitations that they arent clear about.  I dont recall the exact limits, but I needed to upgrade my plan when I was trying to schedule 3 single releases because they were too close together for the basic plan or something along those lines.  Also, if you ever end your yearly membership with them they will take all your music down.  They do offer an option to make a one time payment ($50 per album, I think like $20 per single) to keep your songs up, but thats kind of a kick in the teeth after thinking your getting such a good deal. I used CD Baby before and they were fine but you have to pay for each release. Since my strategy was to try and consistently release singles, Distrokids unlimited release feature is what worked best.  I'll probably just pay to keep albums up and let them drop the singles if I switch distributors.  Hope that wasn't more feedback than you were looking for!

Thanks dude, this one wasnt mine though.  Tribute to Father John Misty.

Yeah, the new norms of trying to get your music played are exhausting with a lot of BS/scams to cut though.  It's very cool that its a possibility now though and you dont need to play empty bars for years until you build a following.  We'll see how it goes.  Thanks for the presave!

Thanks man, yeah definitely exciting!  Yeah, check out the original when you get a chance.  Its a hammer!

w00t!  Congrats on the album!  I did my first pre-save-clicky for it smile  Excellent tribute and really enjoyed the piano with your vocal lines.  The abrupt ending could use like a mic stand drop kick sound lol.    Totally feel ya on the "listener/streams" thing.  I've been putting off the distrokid registration til WB is over and also cuz I'm the king of procrastinators but damn I wish I had a clue as how to easily/organically get people to listen.  I get more soundcloud bots than anything tongue  Looking forward to the album drop!

I hadn't heard of John Misty until now. This cover matches so well. You have a similar sounding voice to his in this track. Really cool to hear you sing that song. Your mix definitely has more clarity than the original.

Awesome, thanks for the presave man!  Yeah, part of the reason I pushed my album release to 2021 was to avoid the stress from WBs so I hear you on that.  But dude, after starting to research the whole digital marketing thing I think you'd have a lot of success with it since your music has such a distinct style and you create solid tracks like every week. I'm sure theres a lot of playlist curators who look for instrumental/cinematicy kind of music too.  I created a profile on Submit Hub and am going to do some pitching through there in January.  Might be worth checking out when you get Start releasing through Distrokid.

Sweet, thanks man!  Yeah, definitely give his first 2 albums a listen to if you feel inclined.  He's such a great songwriter.

Cool I'll have to look into that or get back to ya and see how SubmitHub went for ya because I'm just atrocious with the marketing side of things.  Thanks so much for the kind words too.  I hope I can sneak my way into a few playlists next year smile
