carcus - Fountain of Tears

First time participant in WB, thankful to be here. My intention this year is to learn in public, commit to trying to make something every week, and engage with the community here on WB.

This originally began with an idea to focus on a song structure with "placeholders," replacing sound sources after that was complete. A quote I've heard before is "what is temporary, becomes permanent" rings true here. I left the preset sounds from Ableton with some piano and orchestral sample packs in place, as the time crunch and idea of committing to finishing something is very new to me. In a rush I started searching for a vocal to tie things together. I stumbled upon the poem recited by a user attributed below on Freesound and inspired me to move to explore the idea of a sound collage around it.

I used some of Ableton's spectral devices and GRM Atelier's "play" module on the voice track. Minimal mixing, edits.

Thanks for sharing your process! The "temporary becomes permanent" thing becomes doubly true with WB for me, where I inevitably rush to complete the submissions up to the last moment. WB is truly an amazing exercise at letting go and actually focusing on finishing and releasing trqcks

Great find on the vocal, it's a fantastic way to bring everything together. The instrumentation is brilliant - not sure what you could have changed to make it better. The selective modulation on the vocal track adds a magical, creepy vibe that pushes it over the edge.

Thanks! This is all new to me. I really struggle with sharing and I hope this exercise helps me find some comfort in embracing "good enough" over perfection.

You are too kind. In the last stretch it came down to being savage and cutting out nearly everything I worked on that week and focusing on the vocal content, reacting musically to the words spoken. There's a few parts I wish came through a little clearer in the mix and some phrasing I thought could be better.

Both your comments are helping me fuel up for week 2, and I hope to pay the kindness forward to others!

Very cool, and welcome to you too! I relate to having trouble finishing things. This sounds complete!

welcome to the weekly beats crew 👋 came to listen to yours after you kindly listened and commented on mine. this is a great first track! love the narrative that emerges and the vibe that matches the creepy 18th century vibe. the rhymthic melodies give a kind of clock tower aspect to it for me as well. would pair well with a haunted mansion I feel.

and re: process - yes, it's all process and learning to let go and while keeping going. not being afraid to start anew and just get something out. a healthy, invigorating practice.

51 more to go! 🪩

Welcome.
quite the entrance here. Very elegant.

Thanks the listen and the kind words. That's the vibe I was trying to envelop the poem in. I definitely embraced "let go and keep going" this week, appreciate the encouragement!

Hey, thanks! In the back of my mind, I have some aspirations to reach some of the rhythmic level his pieces, and maybe some of Steve Reich's as well. I'd love to go deeper on some rhythmic variations.
