An Unbearable Silence

By brian botkiller on January 30, 2022 1:56 am

This one started as a synthwave track and then turned into a really long IDM/Drone/glitch track. Ableton literally crashed in the middle of it and I simply could not recover my work, and I was pretty pissed. In the long run, however, it turned out really good. It was mostly made using procedurally and randomly generated patterns and sounds, save for the vocal sample, which came from some really old Computer Music magazine sample disc.

Ableton Live/Push 2/lots of randomness

I love how this track sounds like it's trying to be consonant but just can't figure it out, and winds up with big clusters instead. Whatever your process is, it worked!

So many different grooves to hook onto, very nice! Love those pads!

this is how the best IDM/glitch tracks start. I love I can still hear the synthwave elements.

Makes me feel like a Blockbuster Video clerk put wrong cassette in the case: except it was also a betamax tape instead of VHS.

Were the random/procedure patterns generated through the new LFOs or something else?

also, do you have an IG or something I could follow to keep up to date with your future tunes?

Oh that's so kind of you to ask. I don't post much to Instagram, Twitter is my main channel. You can find me under @brianbotkiller -- I'll follow you back!

Regarding the question about the randomness -- Ableton Live 11 has a lot of random generator stuff built into it -- there's Live Rack Devices that basically take various Live devices and allow you to randomize things like note generation, retriggering, and things like that. You can even just randomize the notes in a MIDI pattern you've made, and make different variations on it. There's also a Live pack that is dedicated to drone/live improv stuff. I used a lot of that one. The drums are a basic pattern, but I automated some of the live devices, specifically the retrigger, to give them a sense of indecisiveness. A lot of the drone stuff, I did the same thing with, and I am an arpeggiator nut -- I have always gotten a kick out of arp patterns, it comes from listening to a lot of Underworld, I think. So there's some of that in there, too.

If you use Ableton I'd be happy to send you the Live Set, or the stems. I make stems of every song that I do, so that I can send out remix kits and stuff.

If you wanna hit me up on Twitter via DM that's a good place to chat. I'm also on the WB Discord, under brianbotkiller. Or you can email me at brianbotkiller at gmail dot com.

Thank you so much!

I realized when I listened to your work that you're into Live as well! That's awesome, yes, let's stay in touch.

these drum beats are so good.  I have Live 10 but uh oh, you're making me want to get 11.
