I was hanging out with some friends on Christmas Eve^2 and we were discussing what makes a Christmas song sound like a Christmas song. For me it's the bells that usually do it.
Would've liked to record this "with the band" but I wrote it on Christmas Eve and wanted to spend *some* time with my family.
I don't think I'm actually as cynical as the guy who writes my songs. Merry Christmas!
‹ Lyrics
I tried to feel the Christmas joy
But they've taken it from me
As I'm paying corporate Santa
to place my son upon his knee
It's a tired old cliche
That there's nothing left to say
To sing a song of Christmas
Does it take bells, or jingling, or holy choirs that sing?
Does it take love? Mariah Carey only wanting me
Or maybe snow? An icy storm that keeps us in our homes
To find the perfect words
When the world is going wrong
What does it take to make a Christmas song?
As I'm walking down the streets
to spread joy and caroling
They're closing up their doors
Too busy opening
The presents that they bought
To find joy that's soon forgot
But they've turned away a neighbor
Does it take bells, or jingling, or holy choirs that sing?
Does it take love? Mariah Carey only wanting me
Or maybe snow? An icy storm that keeps us in our homes
To find the perfect words
When the world is going wrong
What does it take to make a Christmas song?
Does it change keys to make you feel a rising sense of joy
In the reprise, does Santa stop to visit girls and boys
In the malls we're shopping as the Queens of Christmas sing
Do we even remember what Christmas really means?
Does it take bells, or jingling, or holy choirs that sing?
Does it take love? Mariah Carey only wanting me
Or maybe snow? An icy storm that keeps us in our homes
To find the perfect words
When the world is going wrong
What does it take to make a Christmas song?
