Cherry Limeade

By blighters_rock on May 1, 2022 10:40 pm

Took a break from writing lyrics this week.

I've had the acoustic guitar bits in my back pocket for a little while now. Did the recording and orchestration today.

Strings were all done with Logic's included Studio Strings plug-in.

I like the way the strings from 2:02 onwards seem to recontextualize the primary guitar part by playing a different harmony over the top.

I like the sound of those Studio Strings, going to have to give that one a shot some time. I really like this combination of strings and acoustic guitar you have going on. The chord progression is really tasty. Sort of melancholy and nostalgic but hopeful as well. I would totally listen to this on a hike to set some ambience. Nice job!

favorited. love the strings but to me the unsung hero is the quality of the acoustic sound. how did you record and mix it?

Acoustic guitar is indeed very nice. Is it double tracked L R or there is a slight delay to the other side?

I should use logic sometimes, I do own a license, but never open it, and there is SO MUCH stuff into this software...

Thanks! Since I got a couple Qs about the acoustic guitars, here goes:

Acoustic guitars were single mic'd with an AKG C1000S (small diaphragm condenser). I usually try to position the mic about 12-18" away from somewhere around the 12th fret and where the neck/body joint. Guitars are double tracked, hard panned left and right. I used Logic's built-in Vintage Console EQ (neve style) and did a low cut at 160Hz, A small bump at 220Hz, A small cut at 3.2Hz, and then a bit of presence boost to really make them sparkle. Each channel was then lightly compressed with the UAD Legacy LA-2A (I keep trying to make Logic's vintage opto compressor sound good, but I can't). Guitars then have send to a plate reverb. I like using Valhalla Plate, and I'm pretty sure I just used the default preset here.

A couple additional mixing things that I thought worked really well:
- The orchestra instruments used the same EQ plugin, but kinda opposite settings, so there are different freq ranges where the guitar and strings are set up to pop through
- A bit of volume automation on the orchestra bus and the guitar bus to let them take turns having emphasis on different really gave the track more movement, I think. I rarely automate volume--too lazy--but happy I did here.

Thanks for the comments!

Great to read about the process of recording and arranging this piece. Very cinematic, in a way it brings to mind both Radiohead and Beirut. Enjoyed the listen. smile

Beautiful, absolutely gorgeous~
- Ebrit

The string sound is really nice. This works well with the acoustic guitar, bringing some percussive element and rhythm to the strings.

well this is delightful!

cherry limeade is obviously an orange drink tribute title, ty, ty. XD

this is your smashing pumpkins "Disarm" right here my man.

wow, that microphone did a great job.

A+++ on the strings

oooof the slowdown end really destroyed me emotionally.

this track is the interlude of the 3hr Blighter's Rock Stadium Tour Show Performance, where you just come out by yourself under a spotlight and everyone cries.
