Weekly Black Hole Space Invention

By Avrilcadabra on January 20, 2024 11:45 pm

I didn't think I'd get a track done this week. I much prefer to have next weeks idea at least as a thought and this time I had nothing. By midweek the discord got me motivated to at least post something. Originally I thought I'd make some speech on the commodore 64, a bassline using mssiah 303 on 64 and a 909 on the 64, but it was pretty unpleasant.

So I expanded my rules a little, and decided to use different drums, I went back and programmed more basslines into the c64 303 and recorded them through the infamous Bad Monkey pedal. It was started to sound a lot better, I ended up chopping up the 303 lines and rearranging them, then I incorporated a couple of speech samples from the sega megadrive.A break through happened when I entered the wrong chain number in the second half of the song, I wanted to have a second 303 line, but it ended up being a techno kick. Sounded great so left that in. Happy accidents.

You can hear the original c64 909 beat just before one of the drops.

Added more finesse everywhere, Did this all on the M8 of course. I was generally impressed how good this commodore 64 303 lines turned out through the bad monkey. Thanks for reading and listening.

it does! only thing I found is it doesn't seem to be able to tie notes

heavy and satisfying acid riffs! mssiah is on my list of Cool Gear I Would Have Loved To Have At The Time It Came Out But I Know I Wouldn't Have Had Time To Really Get Some Good Use Out Of.  but glad to hear it being put to good use here!

Loved every second. distorted 303 for the win!

So many of us in the ‘week three was rough’ club 😭🥲 glad you made it through, this track is sickkkk

If the filter screams, so do I.

Absolutely bangs! your style with the M8 is so up my alley.
heart 303

Just traversed the mssiah 303 internet wormhole. OMG, do want, didnt realise this was involved.

Your happy accident really changed the whole feel. Fun to listen knowing that was a surprise for you when it first happened. Nice!

Gotta love the happy accidents... fun fact, the drum pattern from "Love Is A Battlefield" (which is legit amazing BTW, totally worth study) was the result of Neil Giraldo trying learn how to program a Linn Drum and accidentally deleting 2 bars from the pattern, which ended up making this really amazing poly-rhythm.

Glad you got over the productivity hump. A fun little groove!

Damn! hard to believe this is being done on the SID but just watched your vid from april showing your running the 303 with M8. Awesome stuff!

Halfway through this track I had to stop and give it my full attention - this is SO GOOD

Love the vocal vgm SFX.  1:54+ is just badass

cheers, some of the lines are chopped up a bit for variation, easier for me to do that on the m8 than program in new sequences on mssiah, and there are a few bits were the sid samples are playing an active lower, but it definitely sounds pretty good straight out of the sid, it is going through a tube screamer clone guitar pedal here too

Yes you should, shame the power supplies went dodgy

my kid and I are bopping to it right now lol great stuff!

how did you do the intro voice?

You made the right calls here, even using the original as break.

It's done on software called big mouth on commodore 64, you just type spk "hello there" and it says the line, often also crashes, might have to try some other ones, then I sample the speech lines into the Dirtywave M8

Thanks spider, seemed a shame not to use it all.

c64+acid??? my mind is blown!

Yeah!  This is epic!  The MSSIAH is a crazy device for sure - love the speech at the start.  It's one of the best speach engines for sure... so thick.
