Permafrost

By Ashtom on April 5, 2026 10:30 pm

This week, I took care of the Sonicware Texture Lab and added new samples to it (sending them via sysex message is time consuming but worth it). And so I created some new patches on it using those samples. They are bringing a breath of air and also some strings to this week's music.

3 tracks were recorded from the Texture Lab on the cassette and 1 was coming from the Deluge, where I programmed a very standard sound (filtered sawtooth and square with a short decay) on the sequencer. However, this time I added probability to each note and also defined a custom pattern length for each of them (so they each loop at different interval). The result gives generative music and I like to do that, because it reminds me of procedural generation and it always surprises me when I play it.

Eventually I drenched the whole in the Nightsky reverb and the MS70-CDR (this with a more simple setup: a long tape echo and a hall reverb). The result sounds definitely icy and subterranean (also quite dissonant, but it's a part of the vibe), which is why I gave it this title.

Thanks to anyone who left a kind feedback and to anyone who will leave one!
Have a nice week!

I didn't know that the permafrost sounds so lovely and beautiful! Great ambiance Ashtom! I added it to my favourites..

I love the thing you can hear here where dense reverb starts to sound like a choir. Or maybe you just have vocal samples on the texture lab? Either way it's beautiful atmospheric track.

Thanks Mockq! I enjoyed recording it so I'm glad if someone enjoys listening to it.

Thanks for this comment! I think it's a bit of both because the samples used in the Texture Lab are definitely on the breathy side, which comes close to choir territory and yes, the Strymon Nightsky is doing a lot as well.
