Ackwards

By Ashen Simian on January 4, 2020 8:41 am

Of course I wanted to do something great, inventive and clever for my first contribution this year, my second in WB. Naturally, all the time I thought would be available for music making, was wiped out by real life commitments, so in the end I just had to do something in a hurry (I have got a feeling that this will not be the last time this year!)...

So here´s a sort of back to the 90´s techno/electro piece, put together in two hours with the help of Yamaha Qy70 sequencer, driving a Roland JV1080, Korg Wavestation, Moog Slim Phatty for the bass and the combination of Akai Rhythm Wolf, Korg ES-1 and Roland TR09 for the percussive things. The pads, vocoded chords and effects are Microkorg, Korg O1Wfd and Polysix. So it´s mainly a hardware affair... I record everything to a Zoom R16 and mix it in my laptop.

Reminds me of some older Underworld material... perhaps it´s the way the beats work together...

Well, anyway... it has begun! In 2018 I fought my way to the end and was really pleased with what I had acheived and learned about working hard and fast. This year I try to be a bit more spontaneus and try out different methods, time permitting...

Really looking forward what the others have come up...

Welcome back!  I always feel like I want to start week 1 off with a bang and then every year I feel like it's one of my weakest tracks.  Oh well.  Gotta ease into this I guess.  But I would say you're off to a great start here.  I remember from 2018 your tracks were always good at taking me on journeys and this continues the trend already.  I like when the beat kicks in and takes things up a notch.

Had a feeling i was going to like it from the first two notes, and boy I was right! At home in Blade Runner or Shadowrun. Brilliant.

2 hours and I would have maybe a drum or part of a melody done, you don't mess around! Very happy to see that you're back!

Thanks!! Nice to see you here again smile  Yeah, that journey thing is a sort of an fixed idea in my head, got to try to make more stationary music too this year, I hope...

Thank you very much! I also like the first minute the most, had to sort of throw everything in for the end, was in a hurry. I just noticed that I forgot to master it louder for the WB. I usually try to keep the dynamics more wide, so I don´t master my music too hot. Well, must remember that next time smile

Likewise! You did great stuff last time and I listened to some of it later on too... I wasn´t totally accurate about that two hours; I had actually done the midi sequencing a couple of days beforehand. That took about an hour and also the hour for mixing and mastering was later. The two hours was the time I spent in my studio recording the actua sound material. I usually work like this, in most cases I know beforehand that I will have a couple hours for studio work on a certain day and usually have some idea or a midi file put together day or two earlier, to work on when I go in. Not nearly always, but that´s the ideal situation.

ahhhh i love the way this progresses, it feels huge

Det är synt! Or you could say... it's rilliant smile

Thanks!!! Yes, there´s a lot of stuff there... i will probably do a longer version of it one day, with a slower progression.

Ha ha, Tack ska du ha smile  My next one will be slow and weird, I hope

Lush and wonderful.  So many layers.  I love it man

totally digging & hearing the underworld vibe! i can't believe this was a rush - mine was too - how did it get to be 2020 already?   that build is excellent!

This is definitely something great.

For me week 1 is the point of a new start. It doesn't have to be great, but I'll develop along the way into something great by the end.

A cool song for having cool cyber space adventures.

Sounds soooo good. Ackwards FTW! BoOm!

Thank you all for your positive feedback. I tend to steer to that 90´s techno sound naturally, but I think some of my stuff will be very different to that I hope...

Sounds great!  Good beats thick sound textures.  I really appreciate your detail in listing out gear that is used and look up the more obscure items.  Best way to learn different methods and techniques.  I'm checking out the Yamaha Qy70 sequencer. As always, much enjoyed!
