OK, on track 2, things start being less minimal. This is all very intriguing. Still very short, though. I expected the duration to expand. Let's see where week 3 takes us!

Thanks! Expansion has started to become very tempting by now, but I'll attempt to stick strictly to the initial plan.

I must admit I never got around to it (my excuse is that the second kick is ok (I hope(?!)) and the first one is squeezed further and further to start and end and filtered away in the middle), but, yes, I think that's a good strategy. In a higher octave the kick will sound like a tom and the pitch will be more discernable. Also, distortion could probably be used as a diagnostic tool to bring out the root note.
