Frolics

By ARiotAtParties on January 20, 2024 11:42 am

For week 3 I've produced another track on the Dirtywave M8 tracker, which builds on various snippets of loops that I made back in October 2023 when I first got the hardware. While I was idly listening through things I had created in the early days of learning the M8, almost everything was just a song row or two trying various functions out, that happened to feature a song title behind them.

However, this one - Frolics - stood out because I had made at least some attempt at an arrangement, but it was still only 45 seconds long and featured some very basic loopage. There was a lot of work still to do, then - a whole bunch of new stuff to create - but the bedrock of something was there and I liked it. I can always tell this when I feel compelled to listen to a simple loop or two on repeat for ages!

As per usual, much of this track uses the synths built into the hardware itself. There are a couple of Macrosynths set to Triple Saw and Vowel FOF algorithms, and an FM Synth which is producing the strings (it's a preset called DarkStrings - not sure if I modified it from the original at all or not!). Then there are some drum hit samples, and a riser sample that has been cloned a couple of times and modified to also feature a kinda 'reverse stab' version.

I'm currently not really doing much in terms of using the M8's unique capabilities - there are no tables, and only a few P-Locks. Just the basic sequencing goes a long way, and song structure is so easy to get going. I'm sure I'll dive into the more advanced stuff eventually! Er... when I understand it more.

Anyway, I hope you like the track. Any and all feedback is always much appreciated!

Bass and drums are driving and fun, accentuated by some cool shifts throughout. 2:34 was a "whoooaa" moment that felt really effective in the context, the ending from there also feels well thought out. Nice!

I immediately see some hyped up oldskool FPS. Love the tension!

Danced with my cat to this one! Thank you!
