Sugar Rush (week3)

By Apticx on January 18, 2026 8:51 pm

Hello everyone, this week got a bit more complex than I originally expected it to go. I started my week 3 on Tuesday and got quite far with it but then wrote this random melody on my wednesday lunchbreak and got so hooked from it that i just had to finish it no matter what.

Really happy how it turned out and very proud of the midi programming of all the leads. Really took the time to dive in and challenge myself to work with pitch as a way of expression way more than usual, like pitching down instead of just waiting for the next note to happen.

Happy hardcore has been a genre ive been listening to on and off every now and then but especially in around 2014 and 2015 it was my primary genre i would listen to so this makes it even better especially cause i think this would be a song i would have ranked in my top songs back then.

The mix can still be improved and i will most likely take the time to properly master it too before uploading it to streaming but even now with this being the direct export of the M8, im very happy with the outcome.

Also if you feel like supporting me check it out on bandcamp: https://apticx.bandcamp.com/track/sugar-rush
Also out on all major streaming platforms

the arpeggio is so.......arpeggio-y i love it

This is so good! I love a lot of things about it, but that mix is especially killer

punchiness

Love this, great chip sounds + bouncy track. Great vibes, great track!

Uplifting, yet somehow carries a tinge of nostalgia, but remains a banger throughout... just absolutely AWESOME!
Great work heart heart heart

I heard this on the stream but didn’t see the title - but when I was listening I kept thinking, I want to eat a ton of sugar and run around the playground like an idiot (really!). And then to find out the title is Sugar Rush…you nailed it.

Absolutely love this track, it’s candy coated joy. Gives me hope, and I need all I can get. Favorited.

Lovely sound design. The synths are cool as heck and the track is truely head-waving with a nice break in the middle. Congrats !!

Very nice and uplifting, reminds me of music by malmen. I love that lead sound.
At 1:45 there is one note out of key but maybe that is intentional big_smile

i sure hope the arpeggio is arpeggioing otherwise i might have critically failed. thanks for commenting!

thanks so much! i love the new OTT master effect on the m8. elevates the highs a bit and just makes it that tiny bit more crunchy

happy hardcore without punch would just be happy music but we need the hardcore too

thanks so much! this type of music holds a very special place in my heart. its what ive been listening in my teenage years nonstop so i certainly link it to nostalgia quite a bit

thanks for the kind words! love how we had the exact same thoughts. running around after eating too much sugar, then the tired aftermath kicks in but you remember there is still some redbull in your backpack. so you chuck that and back to running haha

that means a lot thanks! there is no bigger compliment than a persons head moving to its beat.

thanks for the comment! i wonder which note you are referring to because at least on paper it is all in key and harmonized as intended. maybe the pitch bend could have happened a bit faster because a lot of the expressiveness in the melody works by playing a semitone / sometimes 2 depending on context lower and then pitching up to the correct pitch within the next 8 ticks to give it that legato / slidey feel

beautiful melodies, great drums, love this!!!!

thank you so much!

Yes it may have been the pitch bend! smile Anyways keep up the good work!

i went in again and changed it from a -1 semitone up pitch to a -2 and made the pitchbend happen slightly faster which makes the note its landing on a bit move obvious. imo with this change it sounds better so you were absolutely right. thanks for bringing it up!

This has so much going on with nothing getting in the way of the other. So good.

As a Dutchie, always in for a Happy Hardcore banger! Neat work!

Before I could check who the artist was, I assumed malmen sent in a track for WeeklyBeats. That lead sound is sound is spot on.

Love it. Reminds of The Postal Service.

thanks so much! it took quite a while to make everything sit properly in the mix especially with how limited phase control the m8 has and because i limited myself to pretty much just pulse + triangle for most things

Are you in for a treat! big_smile Enjoy!

Excessively expressive and joyful chiptune of the highest order. Brilliant work and thank you for creating this!

Lovely lead work on this.  Very expressive and humanized.  Such a happy joyful track!

This is so uplifting and energising! I especially like the pumping bass keeping everything rooted

This is great. It sounds like biscoff biscuits taste. Also this is definitely the shit Sonic the Hedgehog raves to once he's saved all the little bunnies.

Haha not sure how you'd improve the mix on this. I love it, as is!

Inspiring work!

I think he's referring to that little grace note. Technically out of key, but as a passing tone I think it was a great choice!

Super cool, love those legato moments!

The melody in this is so expressive. Makes me smile listening to it a second time smile

Never been one for Happy Hardcore but this is a glowing exception! Great work

awesome headbobbing track.
I always love those crying chippy sounds.
Love it!

This track is even more delicious than that Lotus koekje. Awesome track!

So good!! Love the sounds and endearing melody, and the mix is fantastic.

I really like the breakdown and build you got going from 1:30. Great stuff. You really utilized the pitch in a good way. Fun track!

thanks so much!

I pressed "Play" and immediately saw colorful scrolling text from an Amiga game cracktro. Simply excellent chiptune vibes, and a lot of variety to boot. The breakdown is very tasteful. The dynamic range is fantastic. The sound is hifi but never goes far from chiptune territory thanks to that archetypal lead.

No notes, five stars.

This goes hard
