Epiano Mix

By Anon_Buster on November 1, 2020 4:31 pm

Wrote this on my day off and spent the rest of the week mixing. It was nice to spend time thinking about mixing and making each instrument and section work together. I'm really enjoying the sound of epiano and want to continue exploring it in less "jazzy" feeling pieces as I continue playing with it.

Since I'm working on orchestral pieces, I've been building harmonies and chords out of the different instruments playing, so I tried to bring that here. With the epiano playing larger chords--I have an add9 and 13 chord in here, I think...hmmm, can't remember--it made some harmonies with the brass ensemble sound dissonant. I simplified the brass section in the final 1/3rd of the song and had them play similar notes or the 3rd/5th of the notes to try and avoid dissonance. There are still issues with dissonance, but not as much.

Learning for the week:
1. Drums - patterns, variations, excitement in playing, and realism
2. Harmonies - removing dissonance

It has a bit of a jazzy/big band kind of vibe.  I think a little bit of dissonance isn't always a bad thing.  It can add an interesting flavor.

This is really cool man. I love that you're sharing some of your thought processes and challenges each week; it's a really great way for us as listeners to get a feel for how you're progressing and growing. I really like the way your drums are developing over the weeks.

Wow, really cool instrumentation on this track.  So much going on too.  Love that epiano tone.

What a tasty mix. The drums are flashy and the piano puts up a show with fancy progressions and melodies. Props to the sax.

What a wonderwall of chords and sounds. You did a great job in mixing all together. The beat is very vivid and sounds real. I have no idea how to create such realistic jazzy beats. The brass is working well with the epianos.
But do not remove dissonances, please.

Nice sound on that epiano indeed. The snare is huge here, especially during the intro. Very cool drum patterns, did you program these? That's a sweet sweet drum.
Good job on the dynamics like around 2:01 where it's just the piano and hihat. Very nice!
I second the rest of the team - dissonances are good! They can create tension and then you can resolve them.

The rhodes piano is killer.  In the lower range it gets really throaty and rough with a nice texture. Lots of fun piano variations and sounds.  I like the swell on the snare hits in some sections.  Very jazzy indeed!

Excellent use of the epiano.  Mogwai and Portishead are good at using it in a non jazzy way as well.  Nice chord structure too.  I need to try some of those some day soon.  I tend to stick to the same chords too often.  Killer brass section towards the end.
