52 (Cordelia's Underture)

By Amaruq Lonewolf on April 29, 2022 7:38 am

52/Cordelia’s Underture is an instrumental track that I composed in the early hours of this morning (specifically, the morning of 29th of April, 2022.) The name 52 refers to the mythical 52-hz Whale.

As the title of the track and the prior statement confirms, the track was vastly inspired by the 52-hz Whale, also known as the 52 Blue, who is dubbed as the “world’s loneliest whale”. The track features irregularities within the notes, which is complimentary to the whale’s calls, which are produced at the unusual frequency of 52 hertz.

The word “Underture” bears no definition, musical or otherwise. The first instance of the word being used appeared on The Who’s rock opera album, Tommy. As the Overture defines the introduction, Underture remarks the conclusion. Similarly, Cordelia bears multiple definitions, but in this context, it is being used as a name, while using one of its fitting definitions, “the daughter of the sea”.

While disputed, a majority of the marine researchers accept the theory that the whale might be the last remnant of its species, which leads to the context of the title, Cordelia’s Underture. Cordelia is the name that I’ve given to the  whale itself (since its gender is still ambiguous, I selected a feminine name.) and the underture refers to its desperation; swimming through the oceans year by year, desperately calling and wailing, in hopes that it would receive a reply. It’s a witness to the underture of its kind, but its acceptance is often overshadowed by its hope.

Feedback is appreciated as always. I hope you enjoy this little doohickey.
