Wanderers of Deep Time

By alonemusic on March 8, 2026 6:57 pm

This has been a tough week. Just.. stuff to do, and while I made progress early on, I really hated the way it was going after a while and kinda wrote myself into a hole.

When that happens, I usually have 2 options: Full reset, or sample food, where I take the thing that is not working, take out the drums, and sample it with some massive amount of chopping and arranging.

I chose option 2, and this is the result. It's a simple - build - release composition, which feels like harking back to the 'old' days, but I'm pretty happy with the chord progression in the loud bit. It felt like it needed to feel a bit like tuning into a lost radio station. It was also a pain to mix right.

Oh! The title was inspired by an old novel by JG Ballard called The Drowned World. It's.. a good book, somewhat let down by gender and race politics from the 60s, but that aside, it was something I recently re-read (a rarity for me considering a rarely have time for books..) as I was taken by the descriptions of people uncovering primordial memory of jungles as the world floods and heats... its good! just ignore the 60s of it all..

Art:

really good stuff. bit of m83 with that build and the tom runs. looovveee that title. rad as hell.

what bits are the shruthi? was just eyeing one of those and one of my fav bands uses one.

You nailed the feeling of tuning into a radio station.  It goes hard once we're dialed in and builds impressively.  It gets quite big and epic before letting us down gently in the outro.  I haven't heard of The Drowned World, but it sounds pretty cool.  I'll have to check it out.

Again, solid work on the visual art!

And what a journey, I like the build up and outrow. It really suits the track well.

What a beautiful ride, so majestic and colourful. Solid work, I suspect you'll enjoy this one more on later reflection.

(Try not to let 60s media get you down, the past is past, best to enjoy it as you can and understand the rest.)

This is epic and uplifting. Rich sound and kind of a stealth theme - I don't hear any specific place it ramps up, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger until suddenly I notice my heart is racing. Utterly captivating.

love how the arp and guitar sound together as one driving force.  The drums take it to the next level especially when everything comes together around 3:30 yikes Such an uplifting hopeful melody.  Excellent build and release oof those floaty pads sound so good.  Epic feels throughout and calming comedown at the end.  Well done!

the pickup of pace about halfway in was great.  only wish the drums were louder, this would sound sick with the drums pushing the mix into just a bit of saturation.  the gentle outro would still make up for it

By the way, your work on the cover art is appreciated. The music itself is always top notch, but those rich covers add additional sprinkles to the end product. I can tell this is labour of love, even if a week was tough.

Sometimes "sample and reprocess" is the right approach and here I literally have zero notes. I mean, you bought me with those faux '80s tom fills, so objectivity was out the window with that alone. But the thick synth pop atmosphere is really emotive and beautiful here. Neon nostalgia. I half-expected to hear Lauren Mayberry to start singing at any point.

Five stars.

WOW! This piece has such vivid energy, and such a nostalgic feel to it for me. It reminds me of when I was in high school discovering 2010s synth pop bands for the first time. It has that same hopeful melancholic feel of M83 at their best. Lovely sparkly sound design, your efforts mixing it really paid off.
Really enjoyed this. Wonderful stuff!

Fantastic buildup and a lovely vibe. Dig that cover, too.

Love the uplifting chord progression!

The is amazing! It just keeps going and you introduce changes and elements that keep it fun and interesting throughout the track. Well done!

full speed ahead! This has really great momentum

once more I really like what you are doing with the artwork!

Absolutely amazing stuff

Ooooh who uses one (and is it Inifinity Shred?)

The Shruthi is through an auto pan doing the bass in the intro section. I don't think you can get them anymore, but it might be open sourced? I should check, I'll be boned when this breaks big_smile

The Drowned World is great, but, just go in expecting 60's norms/cultures/values. Fun book tho. Thank you heart

Thank you so much... Stealth is not something I've thought of exploring. Maybe a Metal Gear Solid track is in the future...

Yeah.. My drums are always getting lost under the pressure of the mix. It's on my list of things I'm trying to remember when rushing to finish things big_smile Cheers heart
