Roulette round 1

By ahhsumx on July 8, 2018 11:17 pm

This week I wanted to get back to samples, so I played a bit of rhythm roulette with my record bin. I pulled 3 records at random, and tried to sample from each to make a beat.

record 1: weather & water sound effects - https://www.discogs.com/Giuseppe-Coter-Burundi-Music-From-The-Heart-Of-Africa/release/1181307
record 2: burundi (music from africa) - https://www.discogs.com/Giuseppe-Coter-Burundi-Music-From-The-Heart-Of-Africa/release/1181307
record 3: watto sitta - https://www.discogs.com/Mandingo-Featuring-Foday-Musa-Suso-Watto-Sitta/release/1102537

Watto Sitta had all sorts of amazing sample material on it, and Burundi had a good bit of stuff that was useful as well. Weather/water I tried several chops of, but ultimately failed to include on the final beat unfortunately. In the process of digitally chopping a whole bunch of samples from Watto Sitta, I screwed up saving them all and ended up with nothing when I went to use them. So, I spent a 2nd day looking for just enough samples to create a beat with, and I still pulled the most from Watto Sitta, including the kick, snare, toms, and some percussions used in the beat. There are virtual instrument cymbals used, however. There is also a virtual instrument bass, and synth used (the chord played). The other "instruments" were created from Burundi samples (flute, string-like sounds, 'talking' strings).

I'd say I got pretty lucky in finding the drum pieces because that's pretty rare usually, and I quite like the weird "instruments" I was able to create from the Burundi chops. Ultimately a win in my book, though I'm disappointed I wasn't able to include something from all 3 records I pulled.

Ha, nice idea to make your own rythm roulette.
This is a beauty... i dig that flute!!! And i love that percussion...
That rythm is a real headbanger...

Outstanding journey through the samples. Would have been interested in how you might have used the weather effects.

This is awesome!  Yeah, also curious about the weather record.  Some cool records you have, I might want to try an experiment like this one day.

The clap-snare you have is really pretty.  The flute is also killer.

A valiant attempt either way. Well done.

Turned out great, hate it when stuff doesn’t save, I tried this once with my records after watching rhythm roulette, it didn’t turn out well

thanks! my records are pretty random to begin with because i buy them all just for sampling, which I think gives me an advantage when drawing them randomly ha (but also a disadvantage when i pull out weather sound effects...)
