Badminton

Happy New Year! It's nice to be back, but this beat I think encompasses the way it's going to go for me this year. I just have no time; I'm married, with a part time job at an emmy-winning sound studio and lots of freelance sound work on top of that, which is a dream - but it has come at the cost of my passion for music. I haven't made a single song for myself since my last weekly beat in 2024. And today I had to compromise and upload something unfinished, which is usually not the case for my first week. But I've spread my passion into other things and maybe music doesn't give me the same hit as it used to. I don't know, it feels a little disappointing this year. However, good to be back and this song wouldn't exist had it not been for the pressure of starting WB26 off well.

It starts with a drum beat I recorded in September, finally getting my drums out the cupboard for the first time since moving into this house 2 years ago. I only have a snare, hi hat and kick pedal, so you're hearing the snare and hi hat but the kick drum is actually a contact mic attached to a plastic box. I was going to use it to trigger samples, but it's surprisingly good by itself.

My favourite artist of 2025 was a band called Tennis, and if you know of them you'll definitely hear the influence. Probably used the same chords subconsciously. Hence the name, badminton, as I always preferred that sport.

Looking forward to listening to your entries!

Tom

That is a shnifty drum setup! I never would have guessed. I'm not disappointed, this sounds good. I particularly like when the drums cut out and the synths and bass call/answer each other.

enjoyed it ⭑.ᐟ

Nice chill vibes. Productiion quality sounds top notch to my ears!

Badminton is hard on my ankles and knees! I do not appreciate it much anymore but did like your track quite a bit!

man, still love it! glad you decided to publish it. love the drums especially, they feel very real and honest

Very smooth and engaging. The drums are delicious, but that guitar is the special sauce for me. Great sound & adds so much to the vibe.

Chord progression is ace and I love the production, sounds indeed like indie rock acts (whatever this means now, don't know the band Tennis but will check them out!)

It's great to have you back another year, Tom !!! You've been missed

Even if the song is "unfinished" by your standards, the drum sound is top notch and the whole melody goes perfectly with the vibe. I know Tennis (the band) and I think you'd love a band called Kazdoura and their single "khayal". They sound sweet and crystal clear, like many of your productions.

I feel you when it comes to work not giving you enough time. I've never had a creative job but my occupation often requires a lot of travel, so you end producing stuff with a laptop and some headphones in an anonymous room. Hang in there. It's completely natural to not be so inclined to create music if you have to work in a studio every day.

What I can assure you if that you still have all your talent intact... and please, give us some of your DnB tracks this year smile

Great to hear you again !!!

Great to hear you again too! Thanks, Kazdoura is exactly the kind of style I like at the moment. I can feel myself getting back into my music and I think I feel some more electronic tracks coming on too smile

sometimes music is what happens on the way to building your dreams, but once you get there... you can always help others reach their dream musicworld too!

EVERYONE NEEDS TO GO LISTEN TO THE SEQUEL
