Cascatella (excerpt)

By 0F on March 7, 2014 4:32 pm

Phasing with 24 single-cycle waveforms.

Each sample is a sawtooth spike, fed through a delay in order to approximate a kind of crude Karplus-Strong synthesis. The samples are all of slightly different lengths, so gradually go out of sync with each other.
The result is a strange collapsing Sega Genesis-esque sound that generates some interesting rhythms along the way. This is a ten-minute excerpt from a one-hour piece that I intend to release on bandcamp at some point.

Brooding and sinister. Just the way I like it. Out of interest, how different are the sample lengths?

Thanks! The samples were shortened by around 20ms each time (I worked with one source sample and duplicated it); I think a few were cut irregularly as well just to make things a bit more interesting.

Gets really unsettling after a while. Very nice.

Woah.  Love how it gets by half way.

Very interesting combination of calm and unsettling, well done!

def has that unsettling feel once it starts to unravel.  I think it would be perfect in a creepy horror movie where there is nothing but silence (other than this track) and an emergency light flickering to the point of falling off the wall.
