no-fi

By zirafa on June 14, 2020 10:36 pm

Taking a break from the usual routine...a friend presented a challenge to try and make a degraded, lo-fi beat. I still find the concept of "lo-fi" as a genre very, very, very weird, as it sort of collapses old and new into one homogeneous thing that functions like ambient music, or in some cases muzak. I once was playing some classic 90's Pete Rock & CL Smooth instrumentals and someone said "oh, i love lo-fi music," which shocked me, I was honestly speechless. It would be like hearing Beethoven and someone calling it "funky string-fi" or something, lol. It gave me, to use another modern & ambiguous idiom, "the feels."

Kid: *not looking up from smartphone* ya I love StringStep

what does Lo-fi even mean?  Like, busted cassette tape music with crackling vinyl samples?

KIDS THESE DAYS

This is a great beat, it still feels futuristic, yet degraded.  I like how the hiss is also echoed with your white noise swells.

That ping pong bouncy element is really clever

i like the analogy of lo-fi to muzak.  i guess it would be considered a somewhat 2000s version of muzak. ie: youtubes forever running "lofi beats to study to".  This us nice though,  sounds great

I also don't really understand "lofi" as a genre. Nice beat and harmony though!

Lofi can have some good elements.  But mainly from the artists who are actually making all of the music themselves rather than what some of those lazy "chill" producers do where they take a jazzy piano loop and slow it down with a beat and call it a day.  Good lo-fi type stuff to me is basically ambient or just good ol electronic smile  that being said (sorry had too much cawfee today) I really enjoyed your take on it.  The chords are soothing and the beat has a nice feel to it.  The main synth playing the melody is really catchy.  Had to listen to it twice smile  Nice work!

MAN this is smooth. Just what I needed today. Really nice timbres and melodies.
