chromachords

I've been revisiting some older chromawheel instrument prototypes I built several years ago, and forgot how much fun the chord buttons are. I don't think I could have made this track without it. I started by recording some drums, added a circular descending bassline, and then used the prototype to quickly experiment with different chord colors on top. I have no idea what is happening theory-wise, I just used my ear to try and find chord combinations I thought kinda worked.

The chromawheel project slowed down a lot during the pandemic - we were at the stage of refining different features and exploring manufacturing options and thinking about kickstarter, but with the chip shortages and delays and lots of other life challenges I lost a lot of focus and it has been difficult to figure out next steps.

Looking back at all the different versions of prototypes though, I'm starting to imagine a new vision that combines the best parts of each. I feel encouraged to work on things again, despite all the challenges and setbacks.

Thanks for listening and for the opportunity to share.

I really like your drums, and the tone on your instrument here. It gives a strange atmosphere but it's a relaxing song. This is a cool box also! It is something you made? It looks fun to try that smile

Thanks! Yes, the box is one of the music instrument prototypes I made a few years ago. On the right is a circular keyboard of sorts, with 12 chromatic notes of an octave arranged in a circle. On the left is a bunch of chord buttons like Major, minor, 7, aug, dim. To play chords, you hold down chord buttons on the left and then play the root note on the right. This demo vid kinda shows what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjt6UDyZZ1Y

yo this song is hot! AND it's build on a super cool homemade instrument?! incredible. favorited and downloaded

Fantastic jazzy vibe track. I fell in love with the prototype box. Keep on soldering.

bad bad not good vibes! Love this, favorited! And that instrument!!!!

Great song! Loving the jazz chords, That warbley synth. Great bassline. Bad bad not good vibes for sure.
That instrument looks amazing, a work of art, great job. I'm sure it was a lot of work.

oh god i can't even concentrate past that opening fill

album of this please?????

beautiful tones - what was making the sound?

Very smooth, the gizmo could lay a mean foundation and you could go for a jazz expansion, or microtonal variant, arpeggiator?
