Zone Ambiante Preview

By XC3N on February 16, 2026 12:01 am

I have a gig this Tuesday for Zone Ambiante, made a complex hardware setup.... here is me jamming on the first part of it! Since this is an improvised performance, whatever ends up happening Tuesday probably won't sound like this haha... oh and recording allowed me to find a flaw or two in the setup! Good!

Hardware:
Dirtywave M8
Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1UW+/MCL
Soma Lab Lyra 8
Beetlecrab Tempera
MAM MB33
Strymon Bigsky
Erica Synths+112dB Echolocator

Recorded from 1010 Bluebox
Mixed in Reaper with Fabfilter plugins + Ozone 11 Mastering

what a journey! amazing stuff, love it heart

How do you use/setup your Lyra 8? I managed to play one gig with it, but couldn't get anything other than "space whales" really big_smile I can hear you're handling the hardware really well

Good luck and have fun with the gig!

Holy cow this is amazing! It sounds ghostly and exotic, like setting down on a newly discovered desert planet and finding the souls of everyone who ever walked the earth, swirling around in the dust clouds.

That drone-y pad around 2:10 that comes in is CRAAAZY. Love it. Good luck with the performance!!!

Machinedrum? Mmm, tasty. Never heard of the MAM MB33 before, but it serves as an excellent 303 here. And it's analog, huh? Noice.

The track sure is a journey. Starts out mystical and eerie, and the slow burn really takes flight around 2:00. Love the cyberpunk soundtrack vibes you got there. Very wide, moody, and high definition. Incredible shit, especially that this is a live performance. Kudos.

I also used a 303 this week, but I'm doing it in a more vanilla way whereas your bass here is subtle, subdued and somehow stereo?

No notes, five stars.

Thanks! Gig went well, see my week 9 upload haha

So for the Lyra-8, I tend to set everything to be modulated by itself (i.e.: modulation switches to LFO/CV, but with the Total FB switch enabled.

I also like to have vibrato on, sometimes I will turn it on mid perf to have an after/before effect kinda thing + turning it on live adds a little tape like effect to the playing notes.

I'd argue that my use, if not space whales, is still lamenting whales haha.

Keep in mind I alwayyys use it with a reverb, it really doesn't sound as good without that.

Otherwise well I have a tendency to use the two first voices as a thickened drone sound set to slow envelope, so I can sustain it with the hold know. voices 3 and 4 are complimenting 1 and 2 to create a chord, and envelope is set to fast so, if I want to trigger it manually, I set hold to around 12 o'clock (which doesn't hold voices set to fast) and if I want it sustained, I either switch those voices to slow, or put hold higher.

The rest of the voices are set to notes I like lol.

When I play, I use sharp to intensify the sound of whichever note I am playing, I have a tendency to build it up in the reverb and cut sharp down sharply to it lingers (you hear it in this track and in the one for week 9).

I also found out that I could use mod to reach half tones with the notes I set, and doing so that way creates an interesting articulation (a for of glide if you like) ... so this way I get more notes than just 8! haha

I think that's about it... my setup forgoes the LFO and FM.

I use the delay lines randomly (whatever sounds good) and sometimes play with them live to change the sound or create texture (but didn't really do that in the set). oh and I also like to drive the feedback up for an effect similar to what I do with sharp, but for the whole thing (don't go too high for too long, haha)

I also use the drive with drive at 9 oclock and mix at 12 oclock

I think that's it! Have fun and don't hesitate to share back your tricks (you can DM on discord, too)

Thanks a lot! As you know the complete set includes a sample based on your interpretation wink I really like how it turns out, thanks again!

Hey thanks a lot for such a nice comment! I like the MB-33 because it's not a 303 clone, just MAM's take on a 303, I also like that there is no sequencer, the thing is lightweight and only has the knobs I need! (I sequence it with the M8) oh and yes, analogue!

This is mostly live, obviously the drum beats and some of the chords or patterns are preprogrammed, but the lyra-8, melodies, drum tracks mute/unmute, program changes, etc are all done live

Final performance ended up being 26 mins, I think I am happy with it hehe

I am going to check your track real soon! Thanks again ^^

Oh man... gotta love when the Lyra sings. And wails. And screams. Stunningly beautiful.

I bet this was one hell of a show!
