In Bright Axiom

The main theme of this song popped into my head about an hour before I sat down to record this. If I lifted if from somewhere, please let me know. I think it's just something I plucked out on my thumb piano earlier, but it was in my head so fully formed that I worry I heard it somewhere.

I went to the Garden of Memory at the Chapel of the Chimes last night in Oakland. That definitely influenced the direction of this piece. If you've never been, the Chapel of the Chimes is a beautiful mausoleum, all of the cremains are stored in these urns that look like books. During the Garden of Memory, they invite a bunch of experimental musicians to set up throughout the space and perform. The whole place is made of concrete, stone, and glass, so the sound reverberates through all the chambers and blends with the other performers.

The background track was recorded at my Father-in-law's vineyard in Gilroy. I stood on the front porch and recorded the birds nesting in the olive trees, then went into the music room and banged around on the grand piano and cello. Recorded it on my iPhone (I seriously love that voice memo app, I used it all the time) and just dropped it into logic.

This is a nice melody. I admit it sounds familiar but many good ones do. It sounds like it might be from on one of those newish indie movies, Wes Anderson or something.
