Another OP-1 bop, all internal synths/samples, one take to internal album, with some touch-up in post.
Repetitive, but unexpected.  Lot of filler, but plenty of spice too.


My interest in the OP-1 FM engine comes in waves.  Sometimes it feels just not very useful (most of the ratio options being too goofy for typical Yamaha-like FM sounds, and the Red parameter quickly making things not tonally usable).  But then I find patches like these bell sounds, really sweet overtones going on.  Bell tones are super weird.


This week's MVP tho: Finger sequencer. 
The synth version is unique in that you can sequence multiple octaves in one pattern (well, Sketch can too, but that's different).  For the intro, I put every chord arpeggio into its own slot, and played through them while manipulating the tempo live.  The bells were layered on top of that, once the arpeggios locked down the timing.

The drums here are DSYNTH, which can make some killer hits, but can be difficult to keep balanced.  Finger sequencer was really useful for cataloguing every variation of the beat, so that if I decided I didn't like the mix of one hit, it was easy to re-record (provided I did minimal overdubbing).  I could have done more variation/fills in Finger, but the shift+stop finer tape markers were good enough to chop things up a bit.

very wide range of sounds yet they all are unmistakably in your style - the intro is amazing and the switchups keep it interesting.   I always like to eat tacos after I'm done with the nachos i ate after i ate my tacos

Bumped this in my car, the intro sounds uniquely retro / lofi somehow. The beaty bits made me go "oh yeah classic wangus" -- really love your take on funk rhythm guitar that sounds like vocal chops (but I don't think they are).

An old friend of mine once told me that when a bell resonates, the way the bell moves is all sorts of three-dimensional in ways that strings and membranes don't  -- given the complexity of the resonating pattern, he said, hearing a bell from two different points in space is hearing two different sounds. Although since then I found out this applies to most acoustic phenomena (guitar bodies are also weird), I do think it's pretty inspiring to think about all the different ways in which a bell moves about to create its weird combo of harmonic / inharmonic overtones. Sorry, that's just a long version of saying "yeah, man, bell tones are super weird, I agree."

mildly frustrating sometimes how sometimes the best moments take the least effort to create (and conversely the timesinks fall short).  the intro was pretty impromptu, some off-the-cuff harmonies sequenced in, a couple takes before i liked the live tempo twiddling, and then a few layers of bell-like tones to taste.

neat, i wasn't thinking of them like that.  to me, they're an echo of the last two notes of the little riff in that section.  the almost-vocal-tone comes from random modulation of the OP-1 DRWAVE engine.  it's like a wacky version of M8's wavesynth.  two parameters simultaneously sweep through waveform, harmonics/filter, and coarse/steppy-ness, one parameter is like M8's MUL and WARP combined, and the last is the depth of a chorus-y effect.

funny how our brains parse that nonsense out as vowels.  also funny how our brains can take in literally any stupid combo of inharmonic over/undertones like a bell, and just accept "ok yeah that's definitely one note".

you reminded me that I'm not using enough CRANK.  i need to see if i still have the crank knob attachment i 3D printed like 8 years ago.

indeed, the 2:14 arp (and the chords that precede it) mirror the intro.  the age-old technique of secretly-just-reuse-the-same-content-so-you-don't-have-to-invent-more-new-things.
the OP-1 keyboard is SO good for big stupid glissandos, and it really leads the energy of that segment i think (manic arps just supporting actors)

and LMAO it took a sec to remember the "reveal" i put at the end
