Another busy week at work and another kid ill at home for most of the week. Yet, I wanted to push myself to make something original this week. Another thing I wanted to do was to make something with the PreemFM3, as I've been neglecting it for a while now.

I hooked up the PreenFM3 to the Dirtywave M8. I also use the M8 as a sequencer for the PreenFM3. The PreenFM3 is multitimbral, allowing you to load up to 6 different instruments in a mixer. The mixer settings can be saved, so I was able to make most of this track in two after-work evening sessions. I created 5 new instruments (patches) for the PreenFm3 and reused one instrument that I already had. I think I ended up discarding one of the instruments in the track that I just uploaded.

The kick was made with the Dirtywave m8 FM synth. The other percussion (maracas, snare, reverse cymbals) are all samples. There's a noise hit that I made with the FM synth as well. The only percussion-like sound that comes from the PreenFM3 is the wooden drum sound that comes just before the noise hits.

To me, the track still feels like work in progress in many ways, but I am happy to upload this for weekly beats. That's one of the things I like about weekly beats so far: It pushes me to go beyond the 'idea' stage and get to the stage where the idea is at least developed. I have a lot of 'ideas' stored on my m8 and I think I am also starting to understand better which ideas will actually keep being interesting when developed further and which won't.

A bit more about the PreenFM3: It is a relatively unknown, but very capable FM-synth. As far as I understand, it implements actual FM, rather than Phase Modulation (PM), which is what DX-style FM typically is (if I am honest, I think I prefer the PM-workflow). The PreenFM3 has a modulation matrix that offers many possibilities. It also has a very nice sounding reverb, although I didn't use it for this track (I used the reverb in the m8 instead). I have had it for a few years now, but I still feel like I've only scratched the surface of what it can do. Probably there will be more PreenFM3 sounds in my weekly beats submissions down the road.

Dude, this is so good! You again are nailing this sound that makes me feel like a small child again, and I love it. Those FM synth patches are all so good, your drums are killer, and your transitions are excellent. This might be my favorite one from you yet!

A lovely piece and the sound design is excellent. I especially like the slightly sharper sound into the delay. If there is any unsolicited feedback I could offers is that I think it could a use a little bit more bite. Overall the track feels quite round. And with it, it also feels kinda safe, if you know what I mean. I think it could use something a little bit edgier to make it come to life. Just like in cooking, how the acidity of a lemon can really add some zest to a dish. I like how wide and open it suddenly sounds towards the end of the track. Anyway, nice done! Hope your kid is all happy & healthy again. And do keep using that PreenFM3, it sounds good to my ears at least.

Thank you so much!

Thank you! Feedback is always welcome, especially if it is actionable like yours. I completely get what you mean and this might be one of the reasons I felt that it is work in progress. It is still a bit tame. Thanks, this give me a good basis for thinking about how to further develop it.

Hmmm, so while I personally like the soft, safe, innocent feel this currently has, I do have a few thoughts as you how you could add more bite. A simple one would be a crunchy, distorted, searing guitar lead (it wouldn't have to overpower the mix or anything, just a little right in the middle of everything). The other thing might be driving your bass more, although I wouldn't have this be the default state. A thought I had was that the end could be a nice place to add a drop where everything comes back once last time, with the bass being super loud and crunchy. Anyways again this isn't meant to be prescriptive - I really like this as it is, but just a couple ideas if you wanted to add some bite.

Lovely soothing sound design. I really like the mellow warmth of the sounds. It could be the soundtrack to the opening level in a videogame where you're washed up on a beach and start exploring an uninhabited island. Upbeat and encouraging, yet slightly mysterious. Very nice.

A cool introduction to the PreenFM3 too. Looking forward to hear what more you can do with that one!

The production on this is perfect, just the right amount of thickness in the atmosphere. Awesome job!
