Caving

This is my first time attempting WB. I found WB through the Dirtywave m8 community. I am a proud owner of the m8, and probably most of my tracks for WB will involve the m8. However, this first track was made with Sunvox, which is another amazing musical instrument that I am still discovering.

I make music as a hobby, alongside a very demanding job which has nothing to do with music at all. My main struggle in my musical hobby is to finish things. A big part of this struggle is coming up with good arrangements and coming up with variations on ideas. I want to use WB to get some practice with this and to force myself to finish things, even when I am not satisfied with the results yet.

So this first track was made with Sunvox. I haven't mastered Sunvox yet, but I love it, because it is highly portable, yet powerful. I made this track almost entirely on my Fairphone. I started working on the first ideas for this track while visiting a Dutch town called Valkenburg. The chords that the track starts with are made with an attempted custom supersaw module (the module is not great, but I liked the sound I ended up using in this track anyway). Most of the other sounds in this track were made with FM (actually PM) synthesis, which I love. The main melodic line is the SpectralVoice module. The FX that I used for this track are mostly made by a Sunvox wizard called Accipiter Nova.

I have very little experience with mixing and mastering, but have suffered enough GAS to have a collection of powerful plugins. I ended up doing the basic mixing in Sunvox itself (I had difficulties rendering the stems in the way that I wanted them, without spending way too much time) and did some basic mastering in Ableton Live. People with more experience will probably hear plenty of flaws, but to me the difference between the original and the mastered version was already like the difference between night and day.

Anyway, I hope someone will enjoy this!

I really liked this! Love the "sad" lead sound you used. Thanks for sharing, I didn't know about Sunvox.

love this! really pretty lead melodies

Thank you for the encouraging comments! @shamloo: I can definitely recommend giving Sunvox a serious try. It is a really fascinating piece of software with a clever design. It takes some getting used to, but the interface makes it quite enjoyable to make music on (for example) your phone.

beautiful clear textures in the foggy reverb. love the tone of the lead synth like shamloo said. melancholic tune

Nice melancholic track, love little the panned countermelodies. Fun to hear it was inspired by Valkenburg. Been there myself a couple times, it's not too far from where I grew up.
Also I've seen Sunvox mentioned a couple times in the past and it has piqued my interest every time, but at the same time it looks absolutely daunting to get into. I might give it another go at some point.

The kick is meaty even on this meesly Thinkpad speaker. Nice melancholic tune, love the call/response.

really nice. love the choice of sounds heart

Yeah those saw pads sound great so I think job done on the module!
This is very much my jam, love these dreamy vibes

So much good stuff going on I don’t know what to say, all around well done!

Loveddd the change up around 1:25!!! This had me bouncing smile

I love the soft, lo-fi feel of this track. Everything sounds just fuzzy enough to make me comfortable. A little retro. The chord progression is great, and as someone who is 100% confused by Sunvox, I tip my non-existent hat to you.

This is excellent. Captures a mystical, melancholic vibe perfectly.

Also I relate to what you said about not finishing things, demanding job, and GAS lol. Doing WB for the same reasons. Nothing ever feels good nor done enough to release.

Keep it up! Loved this.

Hey glad to have you in the WB community! The best place to learn to finish tracks.
Great buildup here and a cool soundscape! Keep going at it!

so dreamy and uplifting, amazing keys!

Thank you! Yes, Spectralvoice is really good for this type of lead sound. The reverb is from Accipiter Nova. It is a really good shimmer reverb.

Thanks! We visited Valkenburg during the Christmas break. We had a great time! Love your stuff by the way. I recently bought an album by you on Bandcamp.

Thank you! Actually, I still find drums a challenge on Sunvox. Also on this track I was not perfectly happy with them.

I never imagined this track would have someone bouncing, so that is a big compliment for me!

Thank you! Sunvox really has its own logic in some ways, which makes it a bit unusual, I guess. But like I said: it is really powerful and you can use it on your phone! For me this means I can make tunes even when I don't have my M8 with me. smile

Thank you so much! WB really feels like it hits the right spot for where I am at with my musical endeavors!

Glad to be part of it! The community has truly been amazing from the very start. It is like coming home.

+1 for ambient dance music. This is a great vibe. Your sound is huge! The drums could use some attention to raise this up a level and cement your own style. They are fine but a bit standard.

I fully agree. Drums in Sunvox is something I still struggle with.

Super melancholy mood, I like the lead synth's sound and the way sound design varies and progresses throughout

Love this, man! That main lead is wonderful!

Love it. Thank you so much for encouraging me to submit my take on stringmania for the 3rd week (sorry for the advance plug).
