Accidental Dorian

With Easter holidays and a birthday in the family I don't have a lot of time to work on a WB submission this week. I did manage to squeeze this one out.

I have a folder on the SD of my M8 called "ideas" in which I just put any small thing that I think is worth keeping for later. It turned me into a bit of an idea hoarder. Many of the ideas are just short loops that I don't always know how to develop into something longer that is still interested.

I went through this folder of ideas to find something to build on for this week. I picked this idea where I just had a simple progression that I made with the Macrosynth wave paraphonic (well, progression... it basically is just one voice that changes pitch). I built some things around it and there you are.

I kinda wrapped it up yesterday. I thought I'd just sleep on it one more night before finishing it up. Listening to it this morning I felt like it needs something to make it more interesting in some parts and I started to doubt the melodic line that briefly comes up by the end. I kinda like the subtle loop that it starts with, but then there expands with a kind of bell that is not starting to irritate me. However, I feel a bit lazy today and don't have concrete ideas to make it more interesting and neither do I feel like introducing big changes shortly before having to leave for a family thing.

So this is it for now. I think it could become better if I find a good alternative for picking up the energy again after the part where it slows down.

The fade-out in this one is not necessarily laziness in this case. I thought it kinda fits for this track.

Oh! And to explain the name: I vibe coded a kind of tool that helps me identify the key(s) that my songs are (or could be) in that I wrote intuitively. It kinda mimics the phrase layout of the M8. You enter notes and basic on the notes and where they are placed (strong vs. weak beats) it suggests keys. If I remember correctly, it suggested C Dorian for this one.

I also just wanted to say that I appreciate the people in this community a lot (every now and then this needs to be said). I am not half as active as I would like to be, but please know that I appreciate all the amazing work posted on weekly beats, as well as the kind comments and meaningful feedback. You are the best!

This is killer, bud! Love the way things swell and grow and evolve, and there's some awesome sound design here, too. Those pads and breaks really tie the whole thing together, too.

Awesome work, cool that you changed it up with some more aggressive breakbeats this time.
With the bassline never really resolving and the Cmin falling on the 2nd and 4th position of the chord progression, it feels a little ambiguous whether this is in C Dorian, Bb Major or even D Phrygian. The fade-out only helps to keep it unresolved. Interesting stuff!

Lots of cool elements in this one. The resolution at 3:33 with the pad swell is compelling stuff. I enjoyed the break with the noisy edges to it.
