The Dusk Swallowed Lightning

By ViridianLoom on August 9, 2020 11:58 pm

It's been a while since I've sang on one of my tracks so I figured I'd give it a shot this week. I really crammed this one in last minute, its 6 minutes until submission time as I type this but some of you have got me beat on last minute uploads. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to try to iron out some of the rough spots but I figured I'd at least try my best to make the parts I liked the most shine through. Also, towards the end I envisioned a section where the acoustic instruments crossfade into distorted instruments as the section gets louder. I made an attempt at it but it didn't quite hit the mark for me personally. The ending chord progression where it's drawn out for a long time is strange and I wanted to solo over it but I couldn't figure out what scales to use. If I recall it's all sus2 chords descending down in whole step intervals, in 6/4 divided up into three measures. So its like
F#-E-D-C
D-C-D-C
E

So using those as the root note guides, the chord shape that's being moved looks like this
X
9
9
X
9
X

So yeah I dunno, anyone with a mind for theory know whats happening in that progression?

Also I have no idea how this sounds the whole way through since I had no time to get it a last listen before it was time to render it haha. I hope its ok!

Lyrics:
Wrap me up in ice
Almost life like, lightning awake
The inside of a bottle
Uncorked and tossed away
Tied it to the rod and cast away
Little by little
Sinking to the deep azure sea
Icy bubbles of air
Time is not on my side
The sextant guides me right
The ocean floor swollen with light

There are indeed some unusual motions in there, but they make for some very surprising moments. It's nice to hear your voice again as well.

Nice guitar melody, i like how it starts suggesting major but then resolves in minor. This is a subtle track. Did you add a synth layer just under "the inside of a bottle"? That was subtle but so cool!
Awesome guitar playing, very sharp and tasty. And very good singing! This is really a great track, I love the chord progression.

Your vocals are really lovely, and the guitar work is really beautiful. Love this track, man. Glad you managed to make the deadline so I could start my week with it. smile

I love the melody and the progression here, really amazing song. Reminds me a bit of Radiohead.

great melody. this needs some pro production.

had to come back to listen again. this is gonna be my favourite this week...

Thanks! Yeah I enjoyed writing this one, it's definitely bone of the tunes I plan on revisiting when the year is over. Some of the basslines really bother me because I was clearly struggling to figure out what key that ending section was in haha. But yeah, one day it'll be polished and better produced smile

Haha, good ear. Yeah, I think that's the exact moment I decided to add synths, I was rushing and that's the spot I picked to come in because it felt right. Up till then the song was guitar, vocals, bass, and drums but since there's a lot of space between notes I felt that it would start to sound sonically empty unless I added other stuff, so I did a pad and some plucky string synth which I thought started to sound real cool around 4:04 smile. Thank you!

This isn't the first time someone has told me my songs with singing remind them of Radiohead, which is cool. I don't personally listen to them much but the significance of Kid A isn't lost on me so I consider it a compliment of high praise, thank you smile

I dig the initial bossanova feel.
