Spring Sun Hail

By v0 on April 10, 2022 11:57 pm

Hit a major creative block this week. About 5 hours before the submission deadline I forced myself to sit down and get something out. I know if I skip a week it's just going to make it easier to do the same in the future and I really want to keep momentum with this goal. At the same time, I didn't want to just take it easy and phone it in. Even with limited time I wanted to create something I'm proud of and give it my full attention and effort.

So, I rigged up some hardware and effects. Spent a few hours on sound design, patching, and experimentation. Recorded 2 improvised live performances and picked the best one. I did a bit of EQ and mastering but left the performance live and unedited. I'm mostly happy with the results and if nothing else, it was good to get more experience playing my instruments in a performance context and not just as production tools.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's submissions this week, and hopefully get back some inspiration to create something more composed in the coming week.

Cool soundscapes.  After the mellow intro I wasn't expecting the harsher distortion sounds to kick in, but they rule.  It gets pretty intense at times, in a good way.

Man the most relatable write-up / parallels my experience this week also. Love the improv and the sound design here, and the cleanliness / clarity of all of the sounds is remarkable! Enjoyed the pacing of this, and am also very partial to disintegration as the primary motivator for musical form. Enjoyed this.

(I think not skipping a week and putting something out is one of the most valuable WB lessons, so I 100% support putting something out / embracing limitations and lack of time. Kinda feel that materials comprises some of the best and most inspiring work on here.)

Cant believe this is all live performance.  The track seems complete.  The sounds are well designed, and the space they occupy are perfect in the mix.  Love the pads in this one.  Great track.

When the noise wall kicks in at 0:28, it took me by surprise. Like the intrusion of something alien to the previous calm atmosphere. The sounds you are getting from this improvisation are really super cool, very strong, with a lot of grit and texture. This gels into some weird soundscape, like flying over a deeply deeply alien ocean, purple and green, alive with large creatures that are better left below the waters.

love this: the distorted/crunchy highs scrape my ears like a steel saw in such a satisfying way that keeps the track engaging all the way through, feels like a well thought-out, and daring journey

Thank you! I also really enjoyed the surprise opening of your piece this week. I like this idea of setting expectations with an intro and then quickly and completely subverting it. It really forces attention from the listener in a cool way.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Happy to hear the comment about clarity of the sounds. I tend to gravitate towards sounds with a lot of texture which creates a difficult problem when it comes to blending them together. I'm trying to be more mindful of this during the entire process now, where I used to only focus on it during mixing. I found that trying to fix clarity during mixing sometimes squashed the "magic" out of some of the original sounds so I've been trying something else and I'm happy it seems to be working. I also fully agree that sometimes the work done with limited time winds up having great results. I think I actually got back some creative inspiration just going through the process of finishing this piece.

It's also good to remind myself that part of the reason I'm participating in WB is to increase the amount of work I'm producing even if I'm not 100% happy with all of it, or some of it feels like a throwaway. Nobody, not even the most genius composers/producers create 100% masterpieces, or even good music, all the time. For every great piece of music released there are dozens that never see the light of day. Part of the reason these people are able to create brilliant work is because they are creating so much. Quantity generates quality, and that is something I hope to get out of this.

A perfect example of this in a way that was enlightening for me was the Aphex Twin soundcloud dump. This is someone I highly respect, and believe to be high on the list of important artists in modern music. Getting a glimpse into the work that is not being released (in an official kind of way) was really eye opening. There's good stuff in there, but there's also a lot of tracks that are straight up bad. And that's okay! Because great work comes from effort, constantly working at it, and generating lots and lots of music. Without hundreds of "bad" Aphex tracks hidden on a hard drive, we don't get a Avril 14th.

I'm rambling a bit now... But, all that said, I'm grateful to have a community like this to help push me to just do more, keep creating, grow the catalog, and maybe one day create something great myself heart

Thank you! The pad sound is what I was most pleased with on this one. Getting to that big sound when all 3 synths hit hard at the same time was the moment I felt I had found my main idea and was ready to record, and I think that high pad does a lot of the heavy lifting giving that sound its life. It's funny, every once and a while I start to think that maybe "those people" were right about the OP-1. "An overpriced toy with bad sounding and limited synth engines!" "It's only good for Lofi!" Then I tell myself I don't use it as much as I should anyways, and start to dream about the gear I could get in trade... Then I'll pick it up and get a sound like that pad out of it and love it all over again. I really should use it more. There's still surprises to uncover in that little guy after all this time.

That big sound wall was one of my more proud sound design moments recently so I'm glad to hear it worked for you. Love the imagery you associated with this piece. One of the main qualities of art I am drawn to is an ability to spark the imagination of the observer. So, I am very humbled by the thought that this may have done the same for you. Thank you so much for the kind words heart

Thank you! I always really enjoy the sound design work in your submissions so I'm grateful for the positive feedback on these sounds coming from you heart Looking forward to hearing what you're working on next!

the impact at 0:27 had me immediately add this to my week 14 highlights reel

made me think of INSIDE which i played through recently.  (and i don't want to say any more, for those who haven't played it)

i want more ambient music to be THIS kind of atmosphere.  anything-but-background-noise ambience.

I loved INSIDE. The atmosphere in that game is something special. I can totally see how this fits with that aesthetic. I'm happy you liked it smile

Eerie. I dig it! Cool stuff

drony noisey big_smile also i think its ok to let yourself miss a week here and there because if you're so bent on making every single week and then you eventually miss one, it will be easy to feel like you failed and drop the whole practice altogether - as it seems you have done hmm get back on the horse!!

Glad you liked it, and I appreciate the encouragement. Things got pretty chaotic for me the week following this and everything in my life had to be put on hold while I focused on getting everything under control again. Thankfully, things are starting to become more manageable and I was even able to get back to submit something this week and I'm very much looking forward to going back though the past few week's submissions to hear what everyone had been working on while I've been gone.
