Weekly Prelude

By Tweaklab on January 9, 2022 10:41 pm

I started this one with the idea of it having some vocals, the vocals I've written don't sit with the vibe of the tune so I decided to keep the vocals for next week and make a track that is more vocal oriented.

This one was written as my first real track since upgrading from Propellerhead Reason 10 to Reason 12, I tried out some of the new samplers and synths. The 80s bass is courtesy of Serum, the guitar parts were recorded with my Squire Strat and I used the whammy bar for a bit of a human touch (not perfectly on purpose hahaha)

Lots of reverb on the guitar and snare, the piano/keys/choir were also testing out a bunch of the new Reason 12 instruments and patches. Going to have fun in 2022 smile

I usually have an "off year" between WeeklyBeats, however in 2021 I was completing my score for the upcoming documentary "GoldenEra" which covers the development of GoldenEye 007 on the N64 and the team at RARE behind it while also writing some backing tracks I was commissioned to do for an Aussie comedian (Benny Bogan) + more of my own music for a TV show (Fat Pizza: Back In Business) here in Australia! The album for the music in the show even featured some of the cast (George Kapiniaris, Johnny Boxer, Benny Bogan, James Liotta - the TV show has been running for 20 years!) you can find "Bigger and Cheesier Music from Fat Pizza" on Spotify, BandCamp, YouTube Music, Apple Music etc and the GoldenEra soundtrack album is coming soon as well!

***UPDATE*** Video now available!

Sounds nice! I like the composition and esp. the guitars since they sound more human, but I would have liked the choir parts to be less like generic choir sound from a keyboard. Other than that I'd like to read about how you made the track! Well done smile

The choir is a fun touch. Great precursor to the darker section where the guitar comes in. Like the chill switch up in the middle. This is like two weeklybeat tunes in one week... got to pace yourself. Good to hear your tracks again!

This is super cool! The voices there gave me a strong Akira vibe. I LOVE this track but i am biased towards synthwave and you got me with the arp. Super cool and cinematic. I like the guitar chords in the background, they bring a nice gritty texture that we don't often hear in synthwave like music. Cool transition in the middle, it's interesting how the track morphs mid point from that original eery slightly disturbing vibe to something brighter in the second half before going back to the arp. Super inspiring work.

Now I want to go through your bazillion albums on Bandcamp!
Looking forward to more of your tracks this year!

I got you! smile Sorry about that - I wanted to make sure I met the deadline haha - details (an essay really) in there now - thanks also for the comments!

Oh yea brilliant! nice insights, thanks! now the variety of instruments makes a lot more sense big_smile it's a nice mix of different stuff even though a bit unrelated in the middle, it tells a nice story.

with all the work that you're doing:

are you aware that you're a father of three?  LOL

YO the guitar is hottttt

This has some "theme song" vibes for sure - and then cool, like, whole other song?  Nice two-fer here (gimee twofer for a pizza)

cinematic intro / synthwave jam / hip hop beat

Fathers of 3 unite! I was bobbing my head to this. When the guitar comes in around 1:10 I was all-in. Great way to start the year. Also, your 2021 accomplishments are inspiring! Awesome work man.

nice pentatonic phrases. Reason user here too

Sweet dude, this sounds awesome.  Definitely covers a lot of ground sonically.  Good to hear you got some commissions and could make some money off your music last year.

big cinematic synthwave vibes! love the switchup to slick uplifting breakbeats halfway through yikes

Really like this. The outro is sick.

Wow, Fat Pizza sounds like my kinda show!

Someone posted this clip from the 2021 series haha - there's a bit of nudity in the first scene, but you can hear some of my Weekly Beats at:
0:33 Found Thirty Lost Forty (WB2014)
0:50 Hangry Kong's Pantry (WB2020)
1:11 Boombahton (WB2012)
2:08 Sick Mate (Subwoofer)[Blown Fuse Mix] - written especially for the show in 2021! Inspired by late 90s/early 2000s trance.
2:25 Found Thirty Lost Forty (WB2014)

And the bald guy on the left of the couch in that first scene with the bong haha, he is the nicest down to earth family man... we talk just about every day.
All because of my involvement with the show! Which led to (bonus tracks made in 2021!) -

Benny Bogan - Straya (feat. Tweaklab)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-LkbGQD9bs

^ This was a song he initially did about Australia with a "free use" backing track, it got alot of love on Facebook and a bit of demand for a release... I was commissioned to do the new track and I couldn't resist adding some studio banter even though we were making the track from different states during COVID lol smile

Benny Bogan - Demons (feat. Tweaklab & Papa Moose 101)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p3KTU6iLfs

^ For Benny's 2nd single he wanted to go for something more deep and serious, talked to me about it, and we agreed on a 90s/00s Korn/Movie Soundtrack vibe. I put the 7-string to use on this one and did my best Pennywise impression for the breakdown!

Thank you!!! I've taken on the challenge of doing a video for each beat this year... I recorded all the footage last night and will get it up later today for Week 1 smile

Thanks man! Your track was absolutely on point by the way. Loved it. I tend to do this thing, and seeing Infected Mushroom do it a lot as well, made it sit with me as an ok thing to do... but one of my hacks to get a song fleshed out to a decent length is to just completely jump to something different after the main drop, serving as a breakdown or something haha. I listened to their 2012 album a bunch and noticed they will have songs that have 3 sections and go for 5 minutes as one non stop journey, often never going back to reprise the opening line even lol

YES!  DrinkLabSquad22  Love the can holder!!!!  I watched the video at like 5am local time because I got notified smile

I guess now you can use the year to relax, I know I will with this song

Great Stuff

Ooh, nice -- especially with the changeup in the middle.
Really digging this.

Thank you all for your comments! I really appreciate it and I'm trying my best to listen to the other 250 odd tracks submitted last week haha. The one's I've heard all sound great in their own right, I've left comments where I was able to at the time. Uploading track 2 now! This one's going to be a bit cute on the video front.
