I've started going through the material for this class on Kadenze:

The second sessions is all about composing from motives and finding ways to build on simple ideas. I started this track with a small motive and transposed, reverse, and inverted it for different parts, including the drum rhythms. It's not a way of doing things I'd really thought about before, but I can certainly see how I could apply this in less conventional ways (e.g. building a motive from changes in timbre).
